Something Odd

Post by sacesta »

I've just notice something odd in my records. I have two sets of married couples with the same names in different generations and I'm wondering if it's possible that somehow these two couples are one and the same or if it is just coincidence that two married couples happen to have the exact same names. Let me explain. The numbers in parenthesis represent the generation and chronological number of the record.

On 19 Feb 1797 Francesco Sciortino (7-66) married Margherita Mirabella (7-67). The record shows Francesco's parents to be Matteo Sciortino (8-132) and Marta Aguanno (8-133).

Thirty seven years earlier, On 09 Sep 1760 Antonio Barone (8-146) married Maria Sciortino (8-147). Their marriage record shows Maria's mother to be Matteo Sciortino (9-294) and Marta Aguanno (9-295).

Is it just coincidence that the parents Matteo Sciortino and Marta Aguanno listed in each of these records just happen to have the same name? Or is it somehow possible (I don't see how) that they could be the same couple and that possibly Francesco and Maria are brother and sister?

If you assume that Francesco married Margherita when he was in his fifties-sixties while Maria married Antonio when she was 20 or less, then it makes sense that they are brother and sister.
You need to find their birth record.

Matteo Sciortino and Marta Aguanno were married on 25 Apr 1735. Maria Sciortino was born on 14 Nov 1738, three years later.

Maria Sciortino married Antonio Barone on 09 Sep 1760. It was Antonio's 2nd marriage, and he was 34 years old on that day. He was born on the 16th of May, 1726, 12 years older than Maria.

Francesco Sciortino married Margherita Mirabella on 18 Feb 1797. Margherita was 25 years old on her wedding day (born 20 Sep 1771).

I haven't been able to locate Francesco's record of baptism in the books at either San Silvestro Papa (the place of his mother's baptism and marriage) or at San Giuliano Martire.

I suppose it's very possible that Francesco could have been in his 50s or 60s when he married Margherita. That would be so if he was born in the mid to late 1730s or early 1740s.

Francesco's record of baptism will be the key.

Grazie per l'aiuto!

This morning I scoured the records of the Chiesa San Silvestro Papa and I located a couple of key records.

The first is the Record of Baptism for Matteo Sciortino. It appears he was born on 01 Jan 1714 (a New Years Day baby!)

I don't know how I missed this record before. Matteo was born less than two months before his future wife (Marta Aguanno, b: 24 Feb 1714) and appears two pages before her in the same volume.

Matteo and his wife Marta were both 21 years old when they got married on 25 Apr 1735. Their daughter Maria was born 3 years later on 14 Nov 1738.

I also located the Record of Baptism for Francesco Sciortino. He was born on 05 May 1746. He was 8 years younger than his sister Maria. This is the Francesco that married Margherita Mirabella on 19 Feb 1797. He would have been 30 years old on his wedding day. He is also the brother of Maria Sciortino who married Antonio Barone on 09 Sep 1760. So, both Maria and her younger brother Francesco are direct ancestors of mine. But the children they spawned were of different generations.

I think I have this sorted out.

Grazie per l'aiuto Livio!

Grazie ancora!

I made an error in my last post though. Francesco would have been 50 years old (not 30) on his wedding day.

You were absolutely correct Livio!

So it turns out that Francesco was previously married. He was married to Vita (someone??) on the 9th of September, 1787. He would have been 40 years old at this wedding. I wonder if this was a second wedding and the marriage to Margherita Mirabella was his third?

Could someone help me read the bride's maiden name and names of her parents?

Middle record on left...

So he was married three times! And an Aguanno, same surname as his mother's maiden name. That's interesting. Wow.

Thank you.

I can't seem to find the earlier marriage record for Francesco Sciortino & Rosa Aguanno.

I looked both in the records of San Silvestro Papa and San Giuliano Martire.

I did find this entry in the index for Volume 43 in the records at San Silvestro Papa, but it shows a Catarina Cisario? as the bride. The entry appears to reference page 211, but there is a fold at the last digit. I looked through the records from 210 through the end but did not find Francesco.

I'm curious as to who this Francesco is. The timeframe is correct for my Francesco.

I found the marriage record of Francesco Sciortino and Rosa Aguanno. This one is dated 1785, only two years before what I thought was the 2nd of Francesco's marriages. He's 39 years old here. Still plenty of time earlier on for more marriages. How many times did this guy get married?
