help! jure sanguinis questions from a tired researcher!

Post by kgulinoperez »

Hello!

I have been trying to track down all the papers needed for my citizenship application. I am applying and collecting things all the way up to my great grandfather, who was from Sicilia. Any questions these answers will be much appreciated! :D

-Naturalization Record of my GGF: He was naturalized but I can't understand whether it was a federal, state or city naturalization and therefore I haven"t been able to request it. I DO have a photocopy of it and therefore know the number and everything! That seems promising but still I know that I need a certified and apostilled copy. I wish they would just accept the photocopy that I have and could match that somehow and apostille it!

-GGF and GGM's Marriage certificate: I know that they were married in NYC but no idea where I could request for their marriage certificate. Have tried searching to no avail.

-GF and GM's birth certificates: They were born in NYC. I have my GF's original birth certificate and just need to get it apostilled. I was told that just an apostilled copy of my GM's birth certificate should be enough. I do have a paper about her birth that shows her birthdate and stuff, so that is helpful. I am just wondering where in NYC I could request her birth certificate stuff? The NYC county office?

-GF and GM's wedding certificate. Again, where could I get this apostilled? The county of NY?

-Lastly, I need to get my GGM's birth certificate from Sicilia. I already went to get my GGF's, back when I didnt know that the GGM's would also be needed. Do you know of any website links to get this from or do I need to go back to Italy? I saw one website but couldn't tell if it was legit!
Here it is:

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU in advance if anyone knows any answers to these questions, I greatly appreciate the help! I can see why people pay for this to be done for them as this search is EXHAUSTING! grazie ancora!

You can go to those sites to obtain certified birth and marriage records issued in NYC. Instructions are on the site. You get apostilles from the state in which the document was issued. NY has two locations--one in Albany and one in NYC. I doubt it will be possible to get an apostille for a document issued many years ago (although I'm not sure of this) because the apostille affirms that the notarization is official, and they may not have that information for a very old document. To be on the safe side, you may want to get another certified copy of your gf's birth certificate.

When I was applying, I picked up documents in lower Manhattan, walked them to the courthouse for the exemplification (an additional requirement in NYC) and then walked a few blocks farther south for the apostilles. But all this can be done by mail.

This site can answer most of your NYC questions:

Take a good look at the naturalization certificate. It should clearly indicate the name of the court. (Apostille not needed for the naturalization certificate)

Regarding the Italian birth certificate, if you know the comune in which they were born, you can request these records by mail.

Thank you so much for your help, mler! I really appreciate it.

Upon further examination, I have seen that the naturalization paper says "The district court of New York City". So now I at least know how to request it... I'm just a little confused because the Italian Embassy in Washington states that people should get the certified copies from USCIS, and when I had attempted to contact the USCIS' Geneology dept, they said I could only get a regular copy from them. I in fact already have a regular photocopy, and know that it is not enough for submission.

In any case, I will be writing the Embassy for help and clarification about that. :)

Hi kgulinoperez: Did you ever get an answer on what constitutes a certified copy of the Certificate of Naturalization? Does a regular copy from USCIS suffice for the application?

Likewise, with regard to birth certificates and such, what constitutes a certified copy?

Thanks in advance, as I start this amazing process!

Question for "mler":

My Grandfather is still alive and living in San Diego, CA. He was born in the 30s in Queens, NY. After looking at the Birth Certificate website you've linked to, it basically says he can order his Birth Certificate online since he's the one on the document. But, on the VitalCheck Online ordering, at the beginning, it says you CANT order them online and it links back to the link you provided. I'm confused with the conflicting websites, can you clarify how my Grandfather should order his own Birth/Marriage Certificates from NYC? And can you also clairfy the "Exemplification" he would need with his document before Apostille?

Grazie

How's the process been going?

So you're looking to get citizenship through your GGF? Did any naturalization take place along the way that would disqualify you from citizenship?

I ask this question out of my own annoyance that my Italian-born GF naturalized 5 years before my father was born--but all of my aunts and uncles were born prior to the naturalization...so I'm a little limb of the family tree that, it seems, cannot get IT citizenship jure sanguinis.

Maybe; maybe not. In what year did your gf naturalize? Was he married at the time? The answers to these questions are important.
