I've seen this occupation listed before and I "think" that it means he was self-employed. He received income, from whatever source, which he was able to live on.

Hi Donna and Angela

"vive del suo" is actually an expression which came into existence in the middle of the 18th century and is found in the catasti onciario (census records). While it appears to be an occupation, it actually isn't. In some towns, it was used to describe a rentier, or someone who had unearned income. Some towns used it as a synonym for the term "benestante,"-a well-off-individual. In other towns, we find the expression used for some town residents in the catasti, but the word benestante used for others. In some of the catasti, we even find propertario/vive del suo written next to an individual's name. So basically, this person had sufficient means to remain in a more than dignified state without being impelled to practice a profession.
