1753 catasto onciario translation help, pls

Post by dmt1955 »

these are from the 1753 Catasto Onciario of Montaguto regarding my 5th GGfather's holdings.

1. Nicola Mevola (=Meola) lavoratore di 36 anni, Giuseppe Mevola figlio di 14 anni, gualano, Domenico Prata “pecoraio” di 30 anni,....

2. Ha una vigna di un tomolo adiacente a tale masseria. Ha un terreno di 60 tomoli adiacenti alla masseria confinante.....

3. Ha 4 buoi e una vacca aratori.

#1: what are the translations of 'gualano' and 'percoraio' ?

#2: what is the translation of tomolo? tomoli? google translates as: He has tomato vines adjacent to the farm. He has a plot of 60 tombs adjacent to the bordering farms..(i assumed tomoli was the plural of tomolo.)

#3: google translates this as he has 4 buoys and an arachnid cow (WHAT???)

thanks,
donna

# 1 pecoraio- shepherd; un gualano- was an agricultural worker with an annual contract

# 2-tomolo-a measure of capacity of the aridi (barren lands)-1 tomolo was equal to 55.31 liters

https://books.google.com/books?id=uygma ... lo&f=false

#3 he has 4 oxen and a cow-the word aratori is the plural of aratore and means ploughman (plowman). I'm not exactly sure how to translate the line correctly.

an oxen and cow makes much more sense!

thanks so much, erudita, for both the translation and the link.

#1 "pecoraio". "pecora = sheep".

#2 "Tomolo" is a surface measurement unit. In Montaguto 1 tomolo = 3070 sqm

#3 He has 4 oxen and a cow he uses to plow the fields.

mmgno....thanks for adding to the translations. my first thought upon seeing 'pecoraio' was pecorino cheese. at least i was in the ballpark!
