Help Reading Surname

Post by brogie62 »

I have a death record extract from an allegati for a marriage in Palazzolo Acreide, Sicily. I can read it except for the mother's surname:

Carmela Terranova, age 63, daughter of the late Didaco [Terranova] and Maria .....
It looks like it starts with Sall_ but I cannot make out the rest.

Can someone figure it out?

Thanks,
Kevin

I have found the surname Salustro in that town. Could that be it (but with double-l)?

Looking closer, I think that is what it must be. Comparing the 'osto' in 'Agosto' to the 'ustr' in 'Sallustro' I think confirms. If anyone has a better theory I will be glad to hear it.

Thanks Livio. I know it is written as Diego but I thought that Diego is the latinized version of the more vernacular form Didaco. Is that incorrect?

It might be strictly Sicilian.

This was actually the first instance I have found were it is given as Diego. I have found several of Didaco/Didacus.
