Question about Italian death records

Post by ugthar123 »

Is there a way to find a death record for an ancestor if you dont know what province or commune they died in?

My biological grandfather, whom I or my dad never knew, disappeared after WWII, but we have no idea where he may have died, as he would be 97 now if he was still alive.

All we know now is his name, date of birth, and the town he was born in. I am in the process of obtaining his military records which are held at the Florence state archives, but that wont necessarily have any death information, as we are led to believe he survived the war, but just never returned.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Based on my own experience, I haven't found a way to locate death records for ancestors, when the province or town of death is not known, assuming you've exhausted any online databases that may be available. My husband has one great grandfather whose place of death is unknown. His native Sicilian town has no record of when and where he died, but the town official told me that he emigrated to the U.S. in 1931, yet I've never found any evidence of this. In 1920, he was in South America (specifically in Santa Fe, Argentina), as this info appears on a 1920 Sicilian marriage record for one of his daughters. Yet, I can't find any death record for him in South America or in the U.S. I also myself have a great grandfather whose place, and date, of death is unknown, according to his native Southern Italian town. When his wife died in their southern Italian town in 1958, her town listed her as his widow on her death certificate. When their son, my grandfather, registered for the WWI draft in the U.S. he only claimed to to be supporting his wife, two American born children, and his mother in Italy. There was no mention of his father, so then I thought that possibly his father died in Italy during WWI, but I haven't found any evidence of this either. I'm still hoping that, with all of the records being put online, that one of these days, the death info of these two ancestors will manifest itself. Hopefully, at some point in the future, you'll get lucky too.
