Origins of a Surname

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Origins of a Surname

Post by mkaykrista »

Hello, I'm hoping to get some help in finding resources/websites that could help me learn more about my given surname, Gargano. I know that Gargano is a location in Italy, but that's about it. It doesn't seem to be a common surname, and I'm wondering why, and how people came about using this surname.

In my research, my Gargano relatives were all from Sant'Arsenio, Italy. While searching through the archives, the Gargano name seems to be very scarce among crowds of Amabiles, Episcopos and Ippolitos (all also names in my family).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm so interested in learning how this surname came to be, and any historical things that can add to my knowledge. Thank you!

Surnames came into use in the 1400's. To distinguish the numerous Giuseppe's and Domenico's sopranome were used and these were often adopted as a surname. Your ancestors probably originated in the town of Gargano but it is unlikely you will be able to trace them back to that town. When they moved to a new town they would quickly become known to the locals as Giuseppe (from) Gargano.
Some surnames are amusing Saltamerenda (skip snack) others seem offensive Pallagrossi (big balls)
