Birth Record translation

Post by carrieecass »

Hello,

I am looking for help translating the birth record of my great grandfather, Marco Bordone, who was born in 1881 in Naro, Sicily. He was a foundling who was left in a local ruota. The birth record appears to have some more interesting information but I can only pick out bits and pieces. I'm hoping it will provide some additional clues about his situation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Carrie Cassidy

This is difficult to read... is it possible to provide a link to the record?

What I can see -
Birth Act #48
Dated 19 July 1871
The person declaring the infant, Maria Magro(?), is age 60, and the the receiver of the abandoned in the town. She declares that the child is male and appears to be about 24 hours old. She describes him and indicates that there was no number or note on his body, and that he was found at the wheel about 9 PM. The official gave the child the name Marco and the surname Bordone

There is a notation of marriage in the margin that on 10 June 1904 he married with Antonia Angiletti...

Thank you so much! There are alot of mysteries about my grandfather, the first one we just discovered is that he was an orphan. The marriage to Antonia is another because he had a child with her but then moved to America and got married again and had another family in New York.

I don't know if you will be able to access the birth record using this link, but give it a try.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

Thank you for the link... that helps to clear up some of the writing...

First - let me correct the year of birth - it is 1881, not 1871 :-)

The child was wearing a cotton sash and a shirt of white muslin, there was no sign or note on his body, and he was found at the wheel of the abandoned (ruota di proietti) situated in the piazza.
From what I can read now, the child appears to have remained in the custody of the declarant (Maria Magro) for care and nursing.
On the following page is listed the witnesses to the recording of the birth act:
Gaetana Calogero, age 30, (cannot read her occupation); and Rosa Calogero, age 30, butcher; both residing in this town (Naro).

***

In the marriage act - dated 10 June 1904 - the bride's surname is Angilelli (not Angiletti :-) )
#67
In Naro - 10 June 1904
Groom: Marco Bordone, 22, barber born in Naro, to unknown parents.
Bride: Antonia Angilelli, 18, housewife born in Naro to deceased Francesco and [living] Antonina Viccica, residing in Naro.
The mother of the bride was present to give consent.
The publication of banns was on 8 and 15 May.
NOTE: the groom signed the record with the official :-D
