Please help, death record from earthquake 1908

Post by VirginiaG »

Hi, New to this site and would really appreciate any help. I was just able to find the record that my great grandfather Michele Costa died Dec 30 1908 in Messina. I can only assume that he died from injuries from the earthquake. I found this death record on “family search”.. Villaggi di Messina Indici decennial Morti 1906-1915.His listing was on page 177 of 226 pages. The problem I have is that I can not find a record of death for his wife Rita Spinelli/Spinella. On his page on the far right of Michele’s death record it lists his wife’s name. Very few listing have the spouses names listed and the heading at the top of the page where spouse should be listed has been lined out and there is word written over the word spousa.Cognome e nome della then a word written over spousa. I am trying to find out if that means she died with him or may she have lived and be the reporter of his death.I do not read or speak Italian so any help would be great. Thank you

In the index you referenced, there are two listings for Michele Costa (with same parents: Rosario [Costa] and Rosa Maccara). The second lists a death of 17 August 1908 (#640)
I did not see any spouse listed with him.

Here is #640 for Michele Costa in 1908. (This is an official reconstructed record after the destruction of civil records. It is dated 1913)
This Michele was age one year and four months.

I will search for the other record with death listed as 28 December 1906. (#1018)

EDIT TO ADD***

This is the 1906 death act for Michele Costa, son of Rosario Costa and Rosa Maccara.
This death occurred on 28 December 1906. Same age - 1 y 4m.

I could be the same child, or it could be a later son who died in 1908 - ironically, at the SAME age.

In either case... this is NOT your GGF :-(

Hi , Thank you so much for responding. I just tried to submit a response but I don’t see it posted. Sorry lol new to this site. I did see the 1 year old Michele Costa entry in the records but the entry I am referring to is in the Decennali morti C 1906 to1915 pg 177 3rd up from bottom lists #26 and a letter B and the Roman numeral 2. It also states his fathers name is Stefano and his mother Letteria Ianolli and on the far right his wife’s name is Rita Spinelli. This is the right information for mt Great Grandfather I just can’t seem to find the entry corresponding to the Decennali listing. Please any help you can give would be so much appreciated. Thank you Virginia

The II B means that it is in the Parte II of the records.

I am not finding the Parte II for the 1906 records in the Messina Archives.

Maybe one of the other volunteers can locate the record #26
