Reasons for Parents Missing on Marriage Certificate?

Post by joybee »

Hello all --

I've learned so much from these forums while I've started my genealogy research and am hoping you all will be able to help me with this puzzle.

I am very excited because I believe I just found my great-grandparents' marriage certificate & marriage publication, however, I'm a little stumped. Instead of including my great grandmother's parents names, they both say something like "questi gentori." I've included a screenshot here (with my great grandmother's name intentionally obscured, though I am curious about the part written after her name) and I'm grateful for any insight folks can share!

Thanks!

It says IGNOTI GENITORI which means unknown parents, which usually translates to an abandoned child.

Thank you, Ann! I've really appreciated all your knowledge on this forum!

Do you happen to know if there might be more information in the original birth record? It is almost entirely illegible and all of my photo shop attemps haven't helped.

This is very faded, but here is what I see:

The child was presented on 18 December 1896 to the official by Angela Fiore, 40, a midwife, who presented a female child who appeared at her door at 6 AM in Via Fontana. The official imposed the names Sabina Assunta and the surname Natali on the child. Also present was married couple Consolata Saxxx(?), age 38, farmer, and Carmine Russo, age 40, farmer, who I believe requested that the child be given over to their care.

Happy to help! :D

Looking at the record again, I believe that Consolata's surname may be Sarno.
Perhaps one or more of the other members here will take a look and Verify or Correct the information.

Wow! Thank you! I wonder who these people were?!

I might post this on the language & translations help board, too, and see if other folks have any energy and/or luck. My Italian is pretty ok with texts I can read, but I just don't have the vocabulary to intuit words yet. I'll get there! :)

Thank you again, Tessa!
