Post by jrbak »

Dear Latin Researchers,
Would you please help me with the translation of my 3rd great grandfather's birth record. He is Giuseppe, son of Domenico. His mother is Anna Ambrosio. I appreciate your help so much.

This is what I have so far-

Date of baptism was Aug 26, 1773 with birth on the same day.

I see the name Theresia for Theresa twice in the document. I have the godparents as Phinean/or Phineas Giuseppe Antonio Torra of Azeglio (which is a town in Torino Province). The godmother I believe has a title, Donna, for lady, which is abbreviated. Her first and middle names are Maria Theresa but I still can't make out her surname. The priest who performed the baptism was Paolo Antonio Negri

I honestly don't see the surname Ambrosio at all in the record, but I'm still struggling with the parents' names in the record. After ex Giovann Battista is where I also see the first name Theresa. There may also be the abbreviation for Donna (lady) before that Theresa's name as well.

Just a thought concerning the father's first name-the Latin name may be Janus in the record, which would be Gennaro in Italian. So possibly his name is Gennaro Domenico, son of Giovann Battista Negri.

Just chiming in, Erudita. It looks like Maria Teresa's surname is Gagna.

You may be correct about the surname of the godmother. I should have seen the name in the margin for the next record, but the surname of the first Theresa is driving me crazy and I was really concentrating more on that.

I also think that the father's first name is actually Januarius in Latin, as I now see a symbol above it which leads me to believe that letters have been omitted from that first name. It would still be the first name Gennaro in Italian though. I'm trying to locate a marriage record for the parents to clarify the mother's surname.

I'm wondering whether the name appearing after Teresa is actually another given name not her surname? It looks like it might be Victoria? My reading of Latin records is limited to the basics, if that, so not sure of all the words and so many abbreviations.

It's funny that you mention Victoria, as I had had that thought myself earlier and forgot to add it to reply. Right now I am trying to see if the couple had any other children where the names might be clearer.

Another child for same couple. The motherTheresa's surname is given as Negri, but no middle name. Same in link below for another child.

This is all I'm doing with this. I have to get help from mmogno or Pippo. Hopefully one of them will be around to check these records.

Erudita, it makes sense to me that Teresa Victoria's? surname is Negri, because I was understanding that her father was Giovanni? Antonio Negri. I just couldn't read what comes between "ex" and "Janne" in the record.

Great finding those other two birth/baptism records.

Unfortunately, Jefferie was looking for records with the mother's name Anna Ambrosio, which isn't the mother's name in these records.

Yes, I realised that. The record may come up somewhere else in Jefferie's tree or in someone else's tree in the future.

Dear Erudita (Erudita74) and Angela (Angela56),
Oh, MY!! What lengths you both have gone for me in the translation of this record. I can't thank you both enough. I wish there were more words that could express my sincere appreciation for looking into this record. I was so disappointed that it is not my Giuseppe Negri. I am looking for the Giuseppe who married Anna Ambrosio so I will go back and look again, however I tried and then had posted when mmogno responded with this one. I do hope that someone will be able to use this record. One never knows; it can happen. It appears you both did so well in trying your Latin skills and you should be proud!!
My best to you both,

As always, happy to help where/when I am able, Jefferie. It was Erudita who has done all the hard work here. I wish I had spoken up earlier, as I suspected right from the start that it probably wasn't the record that you were looking for, as I couldn't see Anna Ambrosio's name. I had also spent some time looking for Giuseppe's birth/baptism record a little while ago and had worked my way back to about 1773ish and then stopped when I saw it may have been found. It's quite possible I may have missed the correct one though because I've been using my tablet a lot and it's not as clear as my laptop. Anyways, today I've just taken another look, working back from this birth record. I haven't found a record for your Giuseppe but I have found a birth/baptism record for another child born to this couple, and it does give Teresa's two names i.e. Teresa Victoria Negri. I'll just place it here for any future use. It's the first record on the right page: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=442795
