Help with translation

Post by jml1991 »

Hi All,

I am confused by the abbreviation and words between the name, Pietro Antonino di Orlando, and his age (annorum 80) on this death record from 1659 in Prizzi, Sicily. Is that a person's name (Pasqua or Gaspare) after an abbreviation (ab?)? And the word following that: "grillo"?

Any help greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I think what you are reading as "ab" is the abbreviation for the word "alias"-"also known as." I'm having trouble accurately deciphering what follows that and before "grillo." (Pappagrillo???)

Thanks to both of you! ... but the plot thickens ...

I have since found a baptismal record for the son of Pietro Antonio di Orlando and Pasqua (no surname given), dated 1627. Could the death record be referring to Pietro's wife/widow? If so, what would the abbreviation "abs" or "ala" or "ats" before the name Pasqua mean? The same abbreviation appears two records below this one for Francesco Macaluso, and it looks like "ats" on that one.
Thanks for any thoughts on this!

Hi mmogno,

Yes I did -- thank you! I much appreciate your research on this. Just wanted to rule out other possible interpretations.
