Hello all and Buon Natale:
My ancestors all immigrated to the USA (New Orleans) from rural/insular Trapani, Palermo (Palazzo Adriano) and Agrigento (Cammarrata). My paternal Great Grandfather was born in Salaparuta, Trapani. Most on this forum are probably aware that Salaparuta, as other towns in the Belice Valley, were destroyed by the 1968 earthquake. I spent 3 weeks in Sicily (2 days in Roma) last summer and stayed in the local towns where I visited. I was able to find my Great Grandfathers birth records and his wedding, but in Salaparuta, as in all the other parts of Sicily, I was told the family name Ligori is not common. I met with the local Padre, Father Giovanni, in Salaparuta and a Professor who teaches in Palermo (lives in Salaparuta) who is the town historian so to speak and he told me it is likely my Great-Grandfather came from some other area of Sicily or maybe Southern Mainland
I did a name search and the name seems to populate heavily in the Southern tip of Puglia, which is an area where the Sicilian Dialect (language) is also spoken, consistent with what the Professor told me. I have tried to email the Catholic Diocese of Trapani and Marsala but they have no records there. I was told by the Padre and Professor that the Great Grandfathers Father was indeed married in the Church in Salaparuta, destroyed by the earthquake, as the book that recorded the weddings survived. But the actual Sacramental Marriage records are missing, maybe destroyed due to the earthquake
If anyone has any suggestions or maybe had ancestors from Trapani-Belice valley that has some experience with similar matters, I would appreciate the help.
