Do I need to have my own divorce papers?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Do I need to have my own divorce papers?

Post by Mpurpura99 »

I know I need my marriage license and the birth certificate of my current husband. But do I also need papers for my ex-husband (divorced and now deceased)? He has nothing to do with my Italian family lineage. My consulate is in Detroit if that makes a difference

Generally, the consulates expect documentation of all changes in status for the applicant. That would include your first marriage and divorce. They also need to confirm the legitimacy of your second marriage, and the divorce papers provide this confirmation.

You need your divorce papers and likely a "Certificate of No-Appeal" - double check with the Detroit consulate to see if they require the second. Whether or not this matters will also depend on your name changes - if your maiden name is on your marriage certificate to your second husband (if you weren't going by your ex-husband's name or you'd changed it back by the time of your second marriage) they might not question your first marriage because it matches up with your birth certificate. If you married your second husband while still having your first husband's name officially, they might ask for your first marriage and divorce certificate as well, to prove the evolution of your name.
