Austria-Hungary Village

Post by Tanner »

Here is a ship manifest from 1898 via ancestry:

https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... 4007116703

I'm looking at line 12, "Jan Tur Stanko" as a possible relative, and am trying to figure out what the birthplace is. To me it looks like "Palsey" but that's not a place I can find. Lines 10 and 8 seem to say the same thing. It's a confusing thing made more complicated by the vastly different borders today, there's no telling if this guy is Hungarian, Austrian, Slovak, Polish or what. This document claims he's aa subject of Austria living in Hungary in "Angvar?" province but speaks Slovak. I believe this may be a man later known as John Stanko who died in New Jersey in 1932. Any help determining what this birth location is or any other info would be very appreciated.

I see a John Stanko listed in the Catholic Cemetries of the Archdiocese of Newark.

It lists Holy Sepulchre Cemetery as the burial site. There records are available on FamilySearch but you need to be at a FHC or affiliated library.
