marriage note on birth act

Post by dmt1955 »

this is a whopper!

any guesses as to the groom's name on this marriage notation on a 1911 birth act #529 from ariano irpino.
they married in ariano, 25 mar 1947 #77, the online marriage records stop at 1940.

the closest i can come to existing surnames in the town is campagna

thanks

Hi Donna - I agree with Tessa, that the surname looks like "Pompignano." Working on that assumption, the following map shows that surname currently exists in only 2 comuni about 20 miles southeast of Lecce:

http://www.gens.info/italia/it/turismo- ... WP71i-B1qs

When I entered "ariano irpino" in the "search this map" field in an interactive 1862-1876 map, I was prompted that "Via Ariano Irpino, Mezzagrande, Province of Lecce, Italy" was a valid option. That search phrase led me to this area on the old map, which is just 3 miles east-northeast of Lecce:

The "synchronized" view of the above area shows the modern map of the area, on which you can see the road "Via Ariano Irpino":

I'm skeptical about the usefulness of these results. After all, "Via Ariano Irpino" on the above modern map is a road, and your record clearly refers to a comune. And the current location of the surname "Pompignano" might have little relation to its distribution in 1911, the time period of your record. It's just interesting.

Good luck.

On the Trova i Nomi page on the Antenati site:

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... arch]=name

I entered "Pompignano" in the Cognome field and got no results, so it appears that surname doesn't exist in the Antenati database. However, there are at least two people with that surname on Facebook, and both list northern Italian towns (Turin and Crema) as their places of origin.

In fact, I just found your 1911 record, and the document clearly originated in Ariano di Puglia, so forget about my earlier results for the area around Lecce!
