Sicilian Immigration From New Orleans to Brazos County, Texas

Post by kdub »

I'm trying backtrack to find a marriage certificate for my GGGF Antonino Ruffino and GGGM Giovanna Cutrupia. He arrived in New Orleans in 1888 and she arrived in 1890. They married and had their first child in Louisiana in 1891 and by 1900 had settled in Brazos County, Texas. My search within New Orleans did not produce any records, so now I'm trying to figure out where, outside of New Orleans, they may have lived so that I can check those church records. He was a farmer and perhaps lived in a Sicilian farming community outside of New Orleans before moving to Texas. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

According to the 1900 US Census, their first child was born in Texas in 1892.
Next to wife, after the column on years married, it asks "number of children born" and "number of children living" In each case the number is 3 (Fannie (92), Charley(94), and Marie(98), all born in Texas.

Perhaps they were married in Texas?

***EDIT TO ADD***

Here is the 1910 US Census in Brazos, Texas.
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/co ... d=27652859

At the top of the page is the family of Toney Refino (Antonino Ruffino) and his wife, Govna (Giovanna/Johanna). The children residing with them are son Chas and daughter Mary, both of whom we see on the 1900 Census. Also residing with them are children: Lucy, Tina, Frank, and Carlon - all born in Texas, and after 1900.

Interestingly enough, the next family down is that of Frank Cotropia (66) wife Mary(57), and 4 of their 8 children, all of whom are born in Texas.. AND following next is Lucy Cotronie, a widow, born in Italy about 1880-1881, and her children born in Texas.

Couple that information with this arrival in 1890 to New Orleans of Maria Cannaliato (spelled Scannaliato in Corleone) with her children: Giovannia Cattopia (15), A. Maria Cattopia(12), Lucia Cattopia (9), and Antonia Cattopia(6). Misspelled surnames for mother and daughters.... Surname in Corleone is spelled Cutropia.

Arrival of Francesco Cutropia at New Orleans on 4 Nov 1866

Looking at the big picture, it would appear that the above arrival is your Giovanna with her mother and siblings. They were most likely joining the husband and father, probably the above Frank Cutropia. Given that all the children of both Giovanna and Lucia were born in Texas leads me to believe that Frank Cutropia was in Texas when his family arrived.
I believe that Giovanna and Antonino Ruffino were probably married in Texas.

Correction on date of Francesco Cutropi arrival. Typo - should be 1886 not 1866

Further verification of Frank Cutropia and family in Texas in 1890.
On the 1900 US Census (same page age Tony Ruffino and Johanna) - Frank Cutropia family appears several families above the Ruffinos.
Their son Sam is listed as born 1890 in Texas.

Thank you so much for putting this all together! Your connections make it make much more sense that they were married in Texas. There are a few clues that made it seem like they married in Louisiana, but I think your bigger picture seems more likely. I'll start searching Texas records and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again for your help!

I think Fannie's birth record may be the source of some confusion.

It was a delayed registration that was done in 1942 with the Texas Department of Health.
Place of birth is listed as New Orleans.

Yes, that did point me to New Orleans. I also found a newspaper clipping from their 50th anniversary which also said that they were married in New Orleans. I based a lot of my searching on those clues
