Occupation Telaiuolo?

Post by AngelaGrace56 »

I don't recall coming across the occupation "Telaiuolo" before. Has anyone else come across is it. There are five emigrants listed on the attached list with this occupation. I've searched the occupation using different spellings etc but haven't really come up with anything conclusive. Thanks for any help.

I think he was a merchant of fabrics for clothes and home use. I found a link but am not on my computer tonight. Can send it to you tomorrow.

It appears to possibly be someone who uses a frame for weaving, although I know this as a tessitori. Could be regional dialect...

I found another link showing he was a merchant of textiles and fabrics; a draper. May have owned his own retail shop.

Thank you both for your replies. I've brainstormed a bit and come up with things like canvas worker/maker, loom/frame worker/maker, easel stand maker - maybe all a bit off-beat. I'll look forward to seeing your links Erudita.

Thanks again.

"Commenciante: In generi diversi ed in particolare tessuti per vestiti e usi di casa: Chieffo, Ciniglio (telaiuolo)"-Chieffo and Ciniglio appear to be surnames in the area of Italy referred to in the link

https://nap.m.wikisource.org/wiki/Nuovo ... napoletano

My understanding of the occupation from the above two links is that he owned a shop which sold textiles and fabrics and not that he himself was a manufacturer of such goods. I don't believe he was a weaver, as Mark suggested. I believe he was more involved in the retailing of such goods.

Great. Thank you so much for searching and going to the trouble to post these links, Erudita. They are fantastic. I had a quick look at both of them earlier today from my tablet and am going to take a closer look at them now using my pc which is much clearer. I had also checked a PDF that I have which is Napoletano words translated to Italian, in case the occupation was listed, but it wasn't. (I had noticed that in quite a few Napoletano documents on line, the occupation with the same spelling was included, but there was no translation, which is what prompted me to look at the pdf I have.)

Thanks again.

Thank you. I understood "Tela" okay, although that word can have various meanings too, but it was the suffix "iuolo" which threw me.

Hi Angela
Glad I found those websites and you find them useful. I also have a website, which I found a long time ago, with occupations in Naples, but this occupation isn't listed there. Also, for some reason, I always find useful websites when on my tablet and not on my computer. Another thing-I didn't want to use the English translation for "venditore" on the forum because a long time ago, when I did, it would bleep out the English translation of the word, which starts with the letter "s," and label it as spam. I don't know if Edmondo ever corrected this issue.

Hi Erudita

Yes they are really good websites. Thank you. I'm sure I'll refer to them again. Re the pdf which I have, it is not specifically to do with occupations in Naples. It has 117 pages and it contains a list of Neapolitan words in it, with the Italian translation. I can't even remember where I got the pdf from now, I must have downloaded from a website somewhere. It is entitled "Repertorio Italiano-Napoletano" then it says "Napoletano Dialect Giuseppe Giacco_Vocabolario Italiano-Napoletano".

Hi Angela
Thanks for sharing the info about that pdf. I don't recall ever seeing it before but had no problem finding and saving it.

This is the link to a website I found a long time ago, which has old occupations for Naples, but telaiuolo is not there.

https://www.napoligrafia.it/tradizioni/mestieri.htm

Hope you're having a good summer.

Hi again

Glad you were able to easily locate online the pdf I mentioned.

I've been really busy, so only last evening had time to take a close look at the link you have posted here on old neapolitan trades/occupations. It is excellent, and I really appreciate that it also gives such good descriptions/explanations on what each occupation entailed. There are a quite a few really interesting occupations mentioned there. I was really intrigued by the occupation La Scapillata - (some one hired to mourn).

Hope your day is going well, and thanks again.
