question regarding "fu" after parent name in birth certificate

Post by skrivskithar »

Hi there. I have many birth certificates of Italian ancestors where all the sons of "Maria Luigia di Candia" have this format after her mane ""Maria Luigia di Candia fu Salvatore". I know that "fu" refers to a death person, but Salvatore was not her husband (it was Saverio Martino), does this mean she was previously married (in the late 1800s)? Or that her father was called Salvatore?

it means she was the daughter of deceased Salvatore. Her father's surname would be the same as her surname (what we in the U.S. call a maiden name).
