Please help! Are these the same people in both records?
I was looking for the marriage record of Biagio Pomilla and Nicolina di Frisco. I found this but the last name of Biagio looks like di Puma. I am attaching this record and also a copy of a marriage record of their child Anna Pomilla. Can someone tell me if the parents in the marriage record of Anna are the same people in the other marriage record. Any info would be appreciated. The dates seem to be in line but the name of Biagio is different.

Blasi is an older version of Biaggio.

I think Sicilians might say "pummu" for apple ("pomo"), so the two surnames could be related.

Do you have this family on wikitree? Whoever put the info about Nicolina there seems to think that Biaggio di Puma is the same person as Pomillo. I see in her 1837 death record that her parents are the same as in the 1796 marriage record but I'd rather see their names in her baptism record, and Biaggio's parents' names in his baptism record.
There is Ron who posts on this forum who is doing extensive research on the Puma surname. He may have some insights for you about the surname and variations in it's spelling.

Thanks so much, Erudita. I did not even have Giuseppe on my tree. Please verify his spouse's name. I see Vincentia Grizaffi??? Not sure of her maiden name. Biagio Pomilla was my 6x great grandfather so I am very interested in the correct spelling of the name. So how do I find Ron? Do you think Puma and Pomilla are the same? Will check Wikitree also. Thank you!

DESCENDANTS
Mother of Arcangela Pomilla, Leoluca Pomilla, Giuseppe Maria Pomilla, Maria Pomilla, Anna Pomilla, Anna Pomilla, Antonina Pomilla, Leoluca Pomilla and Serafino Pomilla

As to whether the Biaggio's are the same person-I have found that priests and their assistants did sometimes make changes in the spelling of surnames in their records, but I still don't like to jump the gun and say they are the same person without additional proof. For my husband's ancestry, for example, I found a change in spelling occurred with the surnames of the children born later in the marriage, and not with those born soon after the marriage. But only one letter in the middle of the name was changed- an "r" was changed to an "l." After that, the "r" completely disappeared from the surname in all records. I do, however, think that the two surnames are related from an etymology point of view, as darkerhorse stated above. Both are derived from the word for apple.
Anyway, there is a lot of info with this wikitree, so hopefully it will aid you in your research.

I meant to add that the suffix "illo" or "illa" means "small," so I would search for the baptism records of the children of Biaggio and Nicolina to see if the spelling of the surname changed from Puma or di Puma to Pomillo or Pomilla when the children started being born.
