Thanks all for prior responses to get this started.
Here's the scenario:
My daughter received jure sanguinis from San Francisco about 15 years ago, but now lives in S. California under the jurisdiction of the Consulate in LA.
She was already in the AIRE system in San Francisco. We now have her (finally) registered in the LA Consulate for FAST IT. She's very busy so I'm trying to help her registered in AIRE at the LA Consulate so she can change her address Also, she has since married and has 2 children; she wants to formalize her children's progeny and citizenship (which is autimatic if she is an Italian citizen via jure sanguinis, as I understand it)
When I get in into th AIRE site via FSAT ID to try to update and get her registered in the LA Consulate AIRE system, a part of the application appears to be asking for identification papers for her two small children (they are ages 3 and 1, respectively). I'm somewhat confused by way the consulate asks for documents.
The LA Consulate website at:
https://consnewyork.esteri.it/en/serviz ... strations/
The Consulate website (above) states the following:
"2) IDs. Must include the following A and B documents in the same file:
"Italian passport (and passports for each person in the same family unit, even if foreign citizens). For minors, please upload the child’s passport as well as both parents’ passports. If you do not have an Italian passport, please upload a copy of your foreign passport and a proof of Italian citizenship"
I don't understand this. My daughter's infant children do not have ANY passports nor do they have proof of Italian citizenship. The whole idea is to get them REGISTERED in AIRE because they are ALREADY Italian citizens based on my daughter's Italian citizenship and I was informed that as long as I get them registered in AIRE it will be sufficiently official for them to get passports when they are older.
One more thing: My daughter's Italian passport has expired, but I'm assuming a copy of that passport would suffice as ID. Is this correct? If not, I guess she can use her American passport for ID.
My daughter's husband can also upload a copy of his American passport, but what does my daughter do about the children? Would apostilled (county and state) birth certificate suffice for her children?
Also, will my daughter need her marriage certificate and her husband's birth certificate and their mariage certificate. (and, if so, do they also need to be apostilled?)
I also understand that some of the above docs will need to be translated. Does the LA Consulate have a list of suggested translators, as I didn't see one on their website. The San Francisco consulate did have such a list when I and and my daughter obtained jure sanguinis 15 years ago.
This is turning out to be a lot more complicated than I thought it would be, but just like with my original application, I intend to see it through.
Thanks in advance for any and all help and suggestions!
Question about AIRE and granchildren
Re: Question about AIRE and granchildren
It shouldn’t be that difficult. I did this for my son in NY. He was registered in AIRE in 2008 but never bothered to register his marriage and his three children. Since he was already in AIRE, he simply needed to update his file (his address had already been updated. We sent a copy of his US and (expired) Italian passport, his marriage record, and the birth certificates of his three children. All needed apostilles and translations. Six months later, he received confirmation that all three children were registered as citizens. I then sent to our comune in Italy for their Estratto di Nascita.
Re: Question about AIRE and granchildren
It sounds like you have quite a complex situation on your hands. It's great that you're being proactive in trying to navigate through the process.

Check the online booking portal daily—appointments can appear suddenly when cancellations occur or new dates open. Try logging in at different times, especially early mornings, to catch any newly added slots. Also, consult the consulate’s website for specific information on scheduling release days and potential emergency or alternative appointment options. In some cases, emailing or phoning the consulate may be helpful. If you’re still unsuccessful, consider contacting other Italian consulates within your legal jurisdiction.
