Birth Record for Antonio Romeo, Napoli

Post by romepign67 »

I'm looking for the birth record of Antonio Romeo. He has his father listed as Tommaso Romeo and Lucia Bonini on the Church Marriage Certificate from Troy New York, 1900 (on his 1965 death certificate his father is listed as Thomas Romeo and his mother Lucia Bourcei).
His immigration card states he was born in Italy (Napoli), as does his WWII registration card. The ship manifest states his last place of residence as Durazzano.
He was a tailor and married Carolina Pignone (born Maria Caroline Pignone of Apice). They moved to Syracuse, NY sometime before 1910 and had, I believe, 10 children, 6 of whom survived.
I've tried Ancestry and FamilySearch and Antenati and come up blank. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I found the birth record for his younger sister, Virgilia Romeo in Durazzano in 1882, parents Tomasso Romeo and Lucia Bonini. It states they resided in Naples even though his mother gave birth in Durazzano. His birthday is listed as June 22nd, 1877 on the WWI reg card. July 2nd, 1877 on his WWII reg card.

Tommaso Romeo and Lucia Bonini had Virgilia in Durazzano. There must have been some connection to the town.

So I looked for Tommaso's birth - age given as 43 in her record...( so about 1838-1842)
If Antonio was the first born son...then Tommaso's father COULD be Antonio.

In the births for Durazzano in 1843, I found the birth of a possible sister, Dorotea.
There are some interesting possible connections here...

Dorotea was born to Antonio Romeo, the son of deceased Tommaso.
She was born in the home in Strada Mortelle... Virgilia was born in the home in Via Mirtelle
Antonio was a tailor - an occupation usually passed down through generations.

You might want to keep this birth act link in case it is a connection...

EDIT TO ADD:

POSSIBLE birth act of your Tommaso... The father of Antonio Romeo
#40
Dated 7 October 1838 in Durazzano - Birth on 7 October
Father: Antonio Romeo, son of deceased Tommaso, age 38, tailor residing in the town of Durazzano, Strada Mortelle
Mother: Vittoria Cioffi, daughter of deceased Pascale, his [Antonio] legitimate wife, age 30, residing with him.
Child given the name Domenico Tommaso Romeo
Baptized at the Parish church of Santa Maria Capo Casale on the same day.

This is a treasure trove of information! Thank-you so much for your help. Do you know why they may have listed their residence as Naples on Virgilia's birth record? That's what was throwing me when I found that record. That along with the fact that Antonio listed Durazzano as his last place of residence on the ship manifest but said he was born in Naples. I'm going to look through all these records you found. My next task is to find his actual Petition and Naturalization record (I found his Oath and Affidavit in Troy, NY in 1904, but not his certificate)! I can't thank you enough for your help.

Happy to help!

Perhaps Tommaso moved there for work. Of course, that is just conjecture.
They did list Naples as their domicile, so they were residing there.
The difficulty is that you need to know the exact quarter/neighborhood or comune of Naples to find the birth act for Antonio.

Let us hope that the naturalization papers reveal more clues. :-)

I went to a Family Search center near me but was unable to find the Petition or Certificate of Antonio Romeo. I did look through the Nati records for Durazzano on either side and including 1877 for Antonio (no luck). My immigration request is a year out, apparently. I'm not sure how many quartieri there were at his birth, but I'm happy to look through them one by one. Is Antenati the best avenue do you think?

The civil registrations for the City of Naples online are only available through 1865.
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1937990

There are a few towns which belong to the Metropolitan City of Naples which you can search.
You can find them here for 1877.

Good luck!

Hello again- :) I wanted to reach out because I found someone in Naples who requested the record on my behalf and actually found it! I still need to get some of it translated (I can figure out the basics), but I wanted to share it with you since you were so helpful! Warm Regards, Elise

Happy to help with translation!

Year 1877 day 6 of July at 1 PM in the town hall.
Before the official... in Napoli, sezione mercato...
appeared Tommaso Romeo, 39, clerk, residing in this sezione (neighborhood), to declare that at 7 AM on the 2nd of the month in the house in Via Campagnon, #12, to Lucia Bonini, his wife, housewife, living with him, was born a male child, who he presented to the official and to whom was given the name Antonio Michele Taddeo.
After that it mentions the witnesses to the recording of the birth act, who were usually of no relation to the family.

You really are a gem. Thank-you so much for all your help. I'm going to look into those potential parental records from Durazzano you found. And study up on my Italian! Warmest Regards, Elise
