Help with writing on back of picture

Post by deigo1 »

I recently stumbled on to a family picture with writing on the back, I was hoping someone could help with the translation. It looked fairly formal like a military picture / postcard almost.

Thank you!

Diego,

I tried adjusting the image for myself, but still difficult to accurately decipher. This is what I understand.

Genova 14 xxx 1916 ( can’t read the month)

Dear brother,

It’s been 15 days since I’ve written to you. I don’t yet know your news. Please respond as soon as you receive this.

I can’t decipher what immediately follows this, but I think he then sends greetings to his brother’s Lucia (maybe his brother’s wife?) and then he signs “your brother Antonio.”

Hopefully someone else will get a more accurate read for you.

The last sentence is:
Di nuovo ti saluto e ti bacio e ti auguro perfetta salute.
Tuo fratello Antonio.

There’s also an address:
Ospedale Mazzini Celesia, Corso Firenze, Genova.

Most probably Antonio’s brother, or Antonio himself, was a wounded soldier.

Era un Ospedale militare funzionante durante la 1a Guerra Mondiale.

Thank you all so much for the help here!

We found this with my great grandfathers things, we've been told he had a brother, but unfortunately he (my grandfather) died very young, so its been challenging to pull the details together. We know the family moved from Mantova area to Langharino, Parma, but my grandfather came to the US after he married.

The Antonio part is exciting because perhaps it confirms that is his brother's name. On both of the death records of my great great grandparents from Langharino, the person declaring the death is Antonio, but it does not state the relation to them. Unfortunately, last I checked Parma is still not online.

Thanks again,
D.
