Merani family from Genoa (Genova)
Re: Merani family from Genoa (Genova)
Cheers Valarie. I think he must have had two wives. First one perhaps died?
I'll see if I can search into that.
Grandma told me some extra information today.
Apparently, Giacomo merani was a stowaway on a ship from genoa to liverpool. He apparently had a large family, and fought for Garibaldi against the Pope (due to the catholics taking all their money they earnt.)
Also, she told me that margret merani (or possibly Ellen? Not sure,) fled to America because she was pregnant?
Grandma says it was a rumour. But it could be true I guess. I heard that the shame of having a baby whilst unmarried was frowned upon.
And the post that Elizabeth sent of Ellen Winter's census in 1910, America claims that she is a servant? That's what I make it as. But I can barely make it out.
As an update: I'm trying to track down ship manifestos to see which sister traveled to NY with husband Willie Elwood Fletcher. Not much luck so far but fro mwhat I gather, he could possibly be an American citizen.

Re: Merani family from Genoa (Genova)
Update:
Cannot figure out who married Willie Elwood Fletcher. Searched for him on ellisisland but can never get the right guy.. then its the case of finding which of Ellen's sister's he married.
Something in my head is telling me though that he's American because of 'Elwood' resting in his name. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems believable?

I believe the Ellen Winters in the 1910 census I found and the info you just posted for estimated birth year of 1883 is a match. Age on census is 27.

Re: Merani family from Genoa (Genova)
Hey everybody!
Received the marriage certificate today and it doesn't tell me where abouts Giacomo came from in Italy. It does however say his father's name, which might help... not sure though?
They got married on Octomber 2nd 1871 in liverpool. Giacomo's father was named Pasquale merani... also a Mariner.
I also have the street name that Giacomo lived on at the time of marrying Mary;
It looks like either a Trent Street or Front street? Then below it looks like Townsend street. But its not clear. I don't know if that's any help though :S
God this is confusing. can anyone help?

Perhaps on these Baptism Certificate Sarah can find the exact birth place of John Merani, however, Merani is a common last name here in Liguria, especially in the east area of the Region, in the La Spezia Province...

Hey everyone!
I'm really stuck with where to go next. If these baptismal certificates cost then I don't know if I'll be able to get them. Is there any free way at all that I can research this? Every site I go on costs money... such an expensive hobby!
Help anyone? I don't know what to do next...

I don't think that a look at these certificates can cost a lot... I've never been in a Family History Center but I know from this helpful site that you have to pay to rent the microfilm and then you can search in....
And you're lucky because you know the exact number of the microfilms....
Did you tried to contact your nearest Family Center to ask it this is possible?
Here you can find the list:
