My brother and sister have italian citizenship. How can I?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

My brother and sister have italian citizenship. How can I?

Post by jeniferiampietro »

Hi,
My brother and sister have italian citizenship from my grandfather, father side. They went to Benevento years ago after all the process correcting surname, etc.
Now I would like to have mine too so how can I get? I cannot go to italy as I live with my wife and baby in London. Is the process faster as they already have?
Thank you so much
Ciao ciao

Go to the consulate in London, with your apostilled birth and marriage certificates (also your child's apostilled birth certificate so he can obtain citizenship too). Explain that your sister and brother have already had their citizenship recognized and that the pertinent records have been filed in Benevento. They will confirm this, and that should be enough.

Hello, tks so much for your answer. I only have my marriage certificate in Portuguese and translated to Italian. I do not have the birth certificate here, only passport. Do you think it's enough? Do you know how many time it takes because in Brazil it takes 4 to 5 years! About my baby, he is spanish as his mother. Tks again.

You will need to send for the documents that you need, and the birth certificate is a definite need. Your marriage certificate and your birth certificate will both need to be apostilled. This is not difficult to do by mail, but I'm not sure of the procedure in Brazil and in Spain. Citizenship requests do move slowly in Brazil, but it should not be difficult to send for birth and marriage documents and get them apostilled.

To get an apostille for a document, the document should be of recent issue, and since you probably want to keep your marriage certificate, you may want to send for another copy.

Yes, your son may be Spanish, but if you are entitled to Italian citizenship, he is entitled to Italian citizenship as well. In fact, after your citizenship is recognized you should register at the Italian consulate the births of any subsequent children.

Your citizenship quest should be easy, but you will need those documents.

When you get your birth certificate (or any other official document) it is stamped by the issuing authority to certify its validity. Countries are not familiar with the certifications from other countries, and the apostille is an additional certification, acceptable by participants of the Hague Convention--Italy included.

You get your certified document and then request an apostille (from your country or your state--the procedure varies). Indicate that the apostille will be used for Italy, and all will be well.

But this is why it is important that your certified document be of recent issue. The department that issues the apostille must know that the certified document is genuine, and the validity of older documents cannot be ascertained. Generally, you cannot get an apostille on documents more than one or two years old.

You will need to check with your consulate to see if they do that. But much of this can be done by mail. I had documents from Texas and Connecticut. I ordered the certified documents, and when I received them, I sent them to the office that handles apostilles for those states. It was about a month from beginning to end.

I'm not familiar with the process in Brazil. Do a "google" search, and you should find what you are looking for.
