Advice on searching micofilm records

Post by franktroy »

Hi Team,

I started to search through microfilm from Palermo to and I was quite overwhelmed.

What is the best tactic to search for family in these records? There are allot of films available, so I have started with the Nati, pubblicazioni, matrimoni, cittadinanze, morti 1889-1904 FHL INTL Film 1963268 Items 1-15.

I am assuming this is a labor intensive task, doing sequential search and scrolling record by record until I get a visual hit. But any guidance is appreciated.

Regards,
Frank

Dedar Frank there is a companion book for the micorfilms titled DISCOVERING YOUR ITALIAN ANCESTORS by Lynn Nelson which most,if not all consider very helpful to your researches. Researching on your own is very fulfilling. =Peter=

Hi Frank,

I've found that some (not all) comunes have an index list at the end of each year of birth records (nati). I've found that looking to the index list first speeds things up a bit. You find the number of the birth record there and it makes it quicker to go back and find that record. I didn't realize this when I first began my searches and spent a lot of time doing that sequential search and scroll you mentioned.

Good Luck,
T.

AND...I would strongly suggest you follow Peter's recommendation of the Lynn Nelson book. That really helps you get a handle on just what you're looking at.
