Surname: Rainaldi from Pescocostanza

Post by drrainaldi »

I'm trying to locate the names of the parents of my paternal grandfather, Luigi (Louis) Vincenzo (or Vinanzio) Rainaldi, born 3 May 1882, in Pescocostanzo, L'Aquila, Abruzzo. He had a brother Joseph, also possibly known as Alessandro. Family stories say his mother's maiden name may have been Tollis.

I have history in the US from his arrival at age 16 through his death, but am having trouble identifying his parents in Pescocostanza. Records for Pescocostanza are missing for the period of his birth. I do use the FHC and have all the Pescocostanza films on permanent loan.

I've just written to the Diocese of Pgh, hoping they may have some info from wedding or children's births identifying his parents. He also returned to Italy to pick up a cousin in 1906 and was transcripted into the Italian army on his arrival and was unable to return until 1907. I don't know if there might be other records in Italy other than the Pescocostanza records. His passport application does not list a father's name. I've gone back 5 generations on my family research on all lines but this one. Any ideas about how I might continue my research would be appreciated.

Thanks, Leslie

You say you have US records "through his death". Would that include his Social Security Death Index? Using his SS # you can request his Social Security Application (I think it is SS-5). That will have his parents' names.

Here is the manifest of his brother, Alessandro, who he was meeting in Pittsburg. Alsesandro was going to an uncle, Angelo Rainaldi. Perhaps the town records might have either of these 2 men listed.

Thank you. I found his parents names through the Diocese of Pittsburgh. They are Francisco Joseph Rainaldi and Maria Donatelli. I'll use Angelo as well and see if I can locate the rest of the Rainaldi's further back. I did have Alessandro, but didn't see the "Angelo." Appreciate it. -Leslie
