Post by Cassell »

Hello,
Could any one please help me find location of Italy where 2 of my ancestors came from? There names are Paschale or Pasquale Cassell and Maria Edmundi. They had a son Dominico Francesco Cassell that immergrated to the United States. I am also aware they had 2 daughters but they never came to America.

Any help will be greatly appreachated :)

Thank you mfjp and suanj,
It seems my Dominick came over to New England in mid to 1800 (1850 - 1880) on different census he states different dates :(
Do u have more info on Pasquale Casselle from Baia Eatena 1898 33 (was also in N.Y 1890 and 1892) Tho i am not sure that anyone from Dominick's family came to america but him.
Thank you so much :)

Hi Carol, here is the link to Pasquale's manifest.

If you need any help with the manifest, please let me know. Here's a site that also has great info about manifest markings.

Almost all Italian immigrants prior to 1880 came from Northern Italy.

You refer to a census listing...what year and what state? Sometimes, we can back it to arrival information.... If he came prior to 1892, he would not have come through Ellis Island...it wasn't open. But he could have come through Castle Garden and NYCity. Yet, he could have come directly into the port of Boston.

The Boston NARA in Waltham is a very good place to get info. You can e-mail them directly and often they can find the passenger manifest for you. Let me know he census info and maybe we can narrow down the info. Then you can contact the NARA and see if there are any clues to the point of origin.

Let us know.

hiya all :)
The dates of arrival listed on the 3 census I found him in are ..
1900 claimed he arrived 1874
1910 claimed he arrived 1870
and 1920 claimed he arrived 1886

in the 1900 and 1910 he was married to another woman all kids listed was born in Rhode Island. 1900 said he was born 1857 and he says he was 42 and married for 23 years. (makes me wonder if he came in a Rhode Island Port?.) But from all dates he gives for immergration that are before Ells Island :( God forbid he made this search simple... LOL
in 1910 he said he was 60, married 31 years.
Then in 1912 He had first son with my gr8 grandmother in same town he was living in, in 1900 and 1910 I am pretty certain that this Dominick Cassell in 1900 and 1910 is mine. My guess he lied about age cuz my gr8 grandmother was much younger than he. He and my gr8 grandmother had 11 kids and later married after last was born in 1929 married in a Catholic church (hmmm lol). On that marriage intent he claims this to have been first marriage. and that he was 66 then.

ages he claimed for birth on all records are...
1857 in 1900 census in Berwick, Maine
1863 on marriage license (writing in a different laungage)
1872 on death report
1843 is date on his grave stone

I would love nothing more but to find records on him and his family from area they came from and I cant thank you all enough for your time in helping me out :)

Carol :)

essgee is right about Castle Garden... in this case... Cassell Gardens (cute joke mfjp thanks for the laugh LOL)

Well....

The first wife appears to be French Canadian...the son Frank, born in 1892 is said to be born in Canada....

He could have come in from Canada....a lot of Italians went there before entering the US. However, in the 1900 census, she appears to enter the US before he came...yet, you know the dates of arrival on the next census changed. I looked for him in 1880...no luck so far......

Found him in 1910....
Where was he specifically in 1920...I cannot find him. What city, state? How is his name listed?

If his father is named Pasquale, is there a son named Pasquale as well.. According to the 1900 census, the first son is John and this is unusual. In the second famly, is anyone named Pasquale...Patrick, Patsy, etc?

The french document... do you have more??

Oct. 10. 1929, after having obtained the exemption of three banks of
Marriage (Marriage Banns) between Dominico Francisco Cassell son of legal age, of 1863 - Paschale Cassell and Maria Edmundi on the one hand and Anna Robidoux spinster of legal age bapt. 9 seven 1887 - of Antoine Robidoux and Zoe Mathieu on the other hand. We Priest - undersigned received mutual concent in the presence of Joseph Bourassa and of Beatrice Desmorais.
O.N. Desmarais ptre (priest)

helpful info below came from a web site.... mfjp

Records of Marriage
Any step in this marriage process may reveal the locality of immigrant origin, although the marriage process varied in detail from country to country and from one time period to another. Potentially, three different records could be created:

1. Pre-marriage investigation

2. Parish marriage register entry

3. Marriage dispensation

The first two of these relate to the marriage performed by the parish priest. The third refers to the application and subsequent investigation of a future bride and groom by the bishop to waive an impediment to the proposed marriage. Any of these records may and often do reveal the locality of immigrant origin.

to Essgee,
Thank you again for you reply, giving that kids was born Rhode Island I believe he was there prior to moving to Berwick, Maine. But i cant seem to find him there in 1880 giving 1890 was not listed for many areas in US. :(
In 1920 he was in Dover, NH....... giving his first child w/ Anna was born 1912 in Berwick, Maine I am more than certain this is same Dominck, what is odd is I cant locate Mary (first wife) or kids anywhere after 1910. I am assumed she died, but Berwick library had no record she did. I am wondering if maybe she went back home to Canada. If u would like to also see this marriage paper from the Church they ( Dominick and Anna) married in, pls e-mail me too I will be glad to send u a copy :)
Again thank you so much :)

to mfjp,
I have 3 records for their marriage and none say area he was from :( not even his obit :( they all only Say Italy. They records I hold are marrige page from church, Marriage Intention, and Marriage license, death record, and obit.
Death report states both his parents was born Italy too and his father was a farmer. Obit says he was survived by his wife, 5 sons and 3 daughters all of this city, and two sisters in Italy.
Again thank you so much :)
