Pandolfo ancestors
Just found out my great great grandmother's name was Madelene Pandolfo. I have no birth or death records. Only that she was married to Nicola D'Amato. They had at least one child, Pietro, who was my great grandfather. He was born in 1879 in Sant'Arsenio, Italy.
Anyone have input???

Pandolfo is one of the 5 most common names in Sant' Arsenio.

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
Ok, Pandolfo and D'Amato are in the top 5. That's good.
Pandolfo was prince of Salerno? Now I just need to fill in the 1000 years in between! At least this is a start. I can't even find evidence that they came over to the US to visit their son.

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
Have you seen this manifest? I think it might be Pietro's brother and his family.

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
Chrisdamato is Pietro an only child? You initially stated that they had Pietro who was your GGrandfather but now seems that there was more than one Pietro inthe family? =Peter=

I'm not exactly sure of any siblings. Until I received the information from Social Security, nobody knew his parents' names.
His original manifest lists an Arzento or Argento D'Amato arriving with him, but I can't find any more information on this person. Either he left the country before the next census or he died.

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
Misbris,
That may very well be his brother. I believe (I'm double checking) that Pietro worked at that address as a shoemaker. If that turns out to be true, you just found another one of Pietro's relatives for me, and in the process solved the mystery of "who is the D'Amato that accompanied Pietro" back in 1896.
All of you are wonderful sleuths. Hopefully I get that good!!!

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
I have 99% confirmed that the Arsenio accompanied by his son Nicola, is in fact, a sibling of my gr grandfather Pietro. After looking for more information (census, etc...), I'm coming up blank. I have a feeling they never took up permanent residence in the U.S.
I ran a search on FamilySearch.org, but didn't come up with anything there either. At least I've added a couple more names to my tree!!!

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
It sounds like Arsenio was a true "bird of passage" coming here to earn some money and then going back to his family in Italy.
In a way, this may help with your research in Italy, if you can find son Nicola and his descendents.

I'd start with the Professor, who might speak English.

Re: Pandolfo ancestors
Need some help with a passenger manifest from May 26, 1896. My great grandfather Pietro and his brother Arsenio came over from Italy. However, I've just recently found out that their mother's maiden name was Pandolfo. Right above them on the manifest is listed "Pandolfo, Antonio/wife". It indicates that the person is female, 27 years old. I have reason to believe it's a relative of Pietro and Arsenio's mother. I just don't understand why the person's first name isn't listed. Why would it say wife if the husband was not accompanying her????
Re: Pandolfo ancestors
I think her name is Antonia. Her occupation is wife, whether or not she is travelling with her husband. It is not unusual to see that on a manifest. I tried to post the manifest, but it is misfiled on Ellis Island.

Thanks again for the help. The husband that appears on line 20 - I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what it says. Yet another example of poor penmanship on the part of the person recording names. Did anyone back then know how to print??? LOL
