Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
I need a little direction, perhaps a few suggestions.
I know that my grandfather was born here in the US-Manhattan (Gerardo Bartolomeo)
I know that his parents were born in Italy.
I don't know his birth date, only that he was born 1901 (per census records).
I do know his date of death is: Jan 7, 1968
I have his death certificate number; however, since he's only been gone for 42 years, I can't order it without his parents name (which I don't know)....
Just need some ideas on how I can go about finding out his parents names...
Thanks Much

Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
Thank you Michael - seems my critical thinking skills leave much to be desired. I never would have guessed that he would have traveled to Italy when he was born in NY....
Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
If he traveled to Italy would not his parents ( if he was a minor) needed a passport. Oh gosh, you didn't say if they were natualized or not.....
Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
Unfortunately - I have little to no information...I can't find any census records for 1910, 1920 (using Gerardo as the search key) and I don't know his parents names so I don't know if they were naturalized or not.
I want to order his birth certificate, but I'm not clear on the language on the NYC site regarding year searches - it seems it can be very costly...and If I don't have enough information I may be wasting my time and money.
Perhaps you have a suggestion of places I can search for his name that may yield me his parents names.

Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
You can send away for his Social Security Application (SS- 5) which will have his parents' names. If you know his SS# the cost is $27.

Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
Thanks for all the info - I already have all of this...unfortunately, nothing is pointing me to his parents names.
I did order his SS application (without the SSN it's $29.00 - which seems reasonable). Not sure how long it will take to get it and I will place an order for his birth certificate.
If anyone has any other suggestions how I might find his parents (without waiting for the documents) - it would be greatly appreciated

Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
you could have requested his information from SocialSecurity on line with a credit card. www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm under MAKE YOUR REQUEST ONLINE. =Peter=

Re: Where to Begin....Bartolomeo
Hi Peter - That is exactly what I did
If he owned a business - what kind of documents would be available?
What would they have had to file to purchase a grocery store?
Just trying to figure out other places to search.
Also, if an Italian Immigrant purchased a home - what types of applications might they have had to complete? Perhaps that's an avenue I can pursue.

Hi, the two marriage records I obtained from New York, one 1915 and one for 1920 also had a copy of the application on the back with the names of the parents.
You could give it a try when you request the marriage record.
