Rizzo, D'Angelo, Venuto in Sicicy

Post by RizRich »

I have re-started researching the Family Tree that I started in the late 90's. Once I reach the Ellis Island and the Italy search I reach a block. I have input all my data into Roots Magic.

Listed in the subject line are the names I have come up with on my Father's side. My father was born Frank Rizzo on July 4, 1913 in Elmora, NY. His father was named Giovanni "John" Rizzo or Ritz, born 9-5-1876 in Italy, died 5-16-1957 in Glassboro, NJ.

His mother was Rose D'Angelo, born 2-17-1877 in Italy, died 11-9-1953 in Glassboro, NJ. Her parents were Peter (Pietro) D'Angelo and Victoria Venuto.

I do not have the town/s where they were born or the year the emigrated from Italy. I believe they initially lived in Sicily.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. I have been on the Ellis Island website, but I find it difficult to pinpoint who I am looking for.

Thank you, this is very useful. I know that Tony used the last name of Ritz, but everyone else used the last name Rizzo. I was told that his last name was written wrong on his birth certificate and it was never changed.

There are 2 older brothers and 2 older sisters, but based on their DOB, they were probably all married in 1930, and living in North Jersey.

One thing I am not sure about are the immigration dates. Frank was born in 1913 in Pennsylvania, but the census says John came here in 1913 and Rose came here in 1914. But the age of the three brothers is correct. I have not been able to find out when John & Rose came to the US.

Thank you again for your help.

You are right abt the discrepance of immigration date; but in the censuses it are some error... it could be helpful to find the 1920 census, for to know the more right immigration year, but I cannot find it..

Thank you again for the information. Again, this is very helpful. It looks like they came here in 1904, which seems correct, since Joseph was born in 1903 and Clara was born in PA in 1905.

The spelling of the last name keeps changing. I e-mailed Joseph's children and am trying to find out the town they lived in before they came to the US.

Rose lived in San Pier Niceto, which I found out is near Gualtieri Sicaminò.

An earlier post gave me an address to obtain Giovanni's birth record. How exactly do I get it? I am assuming there is a charge. Can I order it on-line?

Thanks again. You two are great.

Suanj:

The information above looks good, but where is the baby? It seems unlikely that he would have come with his father, but I guess it's possible. The age of Rose and the town are correct.

I don't know if Rose had a brother named Francesco but I think she had a brother named Guiseppe D'Angelo. The reason I know this is because I have a postcard dated Sept. 22, 1976. The postcard is addressed to my father and it says it is from his aunt and uncle "tuo zio e zia D'Angelo Guiseppe" Also, the postcard is from Taormina.

Thanks again for your help. I am going to keep digging.
