Finding my husbands Great Grandfahters amily

Post by bougie1107 »

I am starting to research my husbands family, I am hitting a dead end on Charles Sutera I believe he may have been from Scicca, Sicily born around 1865 coming to America in 1884 according to the 1910 US Census. He lived in Broklyn and the family then ended up in Hoboken, however I only find him on the 1910 Census and can locate no passenger records anyone have any suggestions. His wife appeared to be named Vincenza 6 chidren my husbands Grandfather being James. Thanks

Great find T :D !
Another possibility for Charles' name - Accursio/Accurzio??

Possible 1895 manifest?
Same immig date as 1920 census that T :D found,
and after date of daughter Vincenza's birth (on 1910 census)

My sister in law said she thinks Charles may have been married three times, I guess each wife died, which would explain the Luna in the 1930 census, however if you look at the census it said Luna is a M unless it is an error in the census which we know happens. I would love to find Birth records or Christening are those hard to come by?

Ordering records from the NY City Archives is very easy.
You're right if you could find a birth record, or daughter Vincenza's or son James' (Vincenzo?) marriage record they should have their mother's maiden name.

If you haven’t used these, they may help you locate New York City records (there may be transcription errors in names):

Dr Steve Morse One Step Search Pages for New York:

NY Naturalization
NYC Birth Records 1901-1907
NYC Birth Records 1891-1902 (requires ancestry. com subscription)
NYC Groom Index 1864-1936
NYC Bride Index ????-1937
NYC Death Records 1891-1948

Ordering NYC Vital Records
New York City Archives

from NYC records by the Italian Genealogical Group

Hi Valarie :-D
What great finds! Charles' first name was tricky.

Going with your suggestion to try an find Vincenza (daughter) marriage record...
Following marriage was recorded in Brooklyn

Triola Vincenzo Apr 21 1912 Kings 3679 (James Trilo?)
Satera Vincenza Apr 21 1912 3679 Kings

Karen,
You can send away for this marriage record for a small fee from NYC Vital records. You can do this online...

Ok you have all been a great help, however I would really like to try and find tha location of Charle ( Accuso's) birth and his parents name. I am also coming up with no death records for him. My father in law always said taht his family came from Sciacca Sicily.

Hi Karen,
You may want to go ahead and order the marriage record for daughter Vincenza
She and her mother may have travelled to the US under her mother's maiden name (this was usual if not travelling with her husband)
Since their manifest is later (abt 1898) it may give their last location in Italy
Valarie

Here's an example:

15 Dec 1897 SS Trojan Prince
http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/7209/1897w.jpg
lines 23-24

Vincenza Magro 28, abt 1869
- last residence Sciacca
- destination Brooklyn NY
- joining husband Accursio at Nass (Nassau?) Av
(Note: this is unusual for the husband's last name not to be listed, but many of them are missing on this manifest)
daughter Vincenza 3, abt 1894
