Success in LA

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Success in LA

Post by mazzini »

I had my appointment in LA yesterday. The official stated my paperwork was "flawless" and we're in! (me, my wife - married in 1981 - and my 11 year old son).

We went through my living NYC-born mother whose father was born in Italy but was naturalized after she was born. I was born after 1948. My paternal grandfather was naturalized before my father was born so that was a no go.

We had to fill out paperwork regarding our Texas marriage - no parent's names or birthplaces on the license - and my wife had to fill out a form but that's it.

We brought all our passports although LA's website said nothing about it and that seemed to be a good move.

She didn't ask for my maternal grandmother's birth certificate from Sicily but did ask for my father's and grandfather's death cetificates, which I had.

Our paperwork will be filed in Naro, Agrigento, Sicily.

anyone out there from Naro? never been. been to Racalmuto where the other side of the family is from.

This entire process took less than four months and would've taken less if NYC hadn't dragged their feet on correcting my birth certificate (mother's maiden name misspelled).

Anyway, like she told cdevita - 8 months.

I can live with that!

Thanks to everyone who helped answer my questions.

Hello!
I have an appt in April 2011 in San Fransisco. My husband is going to apply through marriage. We were going to wait till after my citizenship was recognized.
Since you mentioned your wife went with you do you know if I can have all the paperwork together for my husband and I then we can both apply at my same appt?
Did your wife have to pay a fee? San Fransisco website says a $200.00 euro fee?
Thanks for your time and help!

A woman who married an Italian man prior to April 27, 1983, was automatically granted Italian citizenship. Keeping in mind the fact that when citizenship jure sanguinis is recognized, it is essentially "retroactive" to the moment of birth, this works in favor for those who married before that date. In my case, for example, when my citizenship was recognized in 2008, my wife automatically gained citizenship as well (we married in 1982).

Notice the bold characters above; unfortunately, the 1983 rule does not work in the other direction - a man who married an Italian women was given no special consideration nor automatic citizenship.

From your post, my impression is that your husband will have to wait until your citizenship application has been granted and then he can file a jure matrimoni application.

PS: The same need to file a jure matrimoni application would also apply to any marriage which occurred on or after April 27, 1983. See http://www.consnewyork.esteri.it/NR/exe ... =Published
