Massanelli Ancestors

Post by chrisdamato »

I'm trying to find records of my paternal grandmother's family. Her mother Antonette died in 1920. I found her in the 1900 census living in NYC with her sister Johanna's family. Antonette's mother Rose is with them too. The head of household was Vincent Mento. The records list Antonette and Rose as having arrived in America in 1892. I tried several searches on EllisIsland.org but didn't come up with anything from that year. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi :-)

For reference here is the 1900 census
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2866 ... census.jpg

Rose born 1846 Italy
Antonette born 1899 Italy, but lists her age as 11...so should her DOB be 1889?
Immigration date noted as 1892

Here is Death Index record for Rose

Massanelli Rose 72 y Jan 27 1922 Cert. #2823 Manhattan

Death certificates are issued where the person dies, so she could have still been living in Brooklyn, but died in a Manhattan hospital.

Tessa, thanks for the info. Yes, Antonette was born in 1889. I saw the handwriting looked like 1899, but her age is listed as 11, so it makes more sense and matches what I had on her already. Any luck with ship manifests??

Not yet. I was wondering ...Rose was traveling under her maiden name (Massanelli?) which is the custom...so what would be Antonette's surname? Did she have her father's last name? The only Rose Massanelli that I've found a manifest for is about the same age as Antonette, and traveling with family... Was Massarelli Rose's maiden or married name?

Also, when I found Rose's death listed in the index, I searched for Antonette without success. What was her married name?

I'll keep looking...and so will others here. Sometimes we can find that "needle in a haystack"...

Tessa,

Rose is her married name. Nobody knows her husband's first name nor do we know her maiden name. Probably why it's hard finding her. Antonette married Aniello Fernandes.

Antonette came over in 1892 as well. I assume they were on the same ship. Perhaps that will help clue you in as to where to look. I tried looking for any Massanelli that came over in 1892 and there weren't any listed on Ellis Island's website. Hard to believe.

Ellis Island opened in 1892 (not sure what month). Prior to its opening ships arrived at Castle Garden. You can search arrivals...

First Name: Antonietta
Last Name: Missanello
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Ausi
Date of Arrival: Jun 25, 1892
Age at Arrival: 6y Gender: F Marital Status:
Ship of Travel: Plata
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0258

There doesn't appear to be any adult traveling with this 6 year old. The age is close but not exact to what you are searching for. I didn't search for a detainee list for this ship. You can search for that, as that may confirm or deny that this is who you are searching for.

Do you know where in Italy this family came from?

Always better to search Ellis Island records from the website www.stevemorse.org. Use the gold form. You can do all kinds of sound searches which this website that you can't do with the www.ellisislandrecords.org website. Also, if you know the town name, you can use just the first letter of the first name and the first letter of the last name with the town name and can all kinds of spellings for your surnames.

If this is Rosa, then her maiden name would be Esposito

The age of the daughter Giovanna matches her age on the census record.

Looks like Giovanna, called Jenny, was widowed by the time of the 1920 census. Look at Jenny Mento, age 43, living at 73 Thompson Street in Manhattan with children Frank 22, and Sadie, 21. There is a Rose last name looks like Masarola?? says, age 70, widowed.
