SAIA brothers 1900's
I am looking for my Grandfather's Father's brothers. They used to come to America to work on the roads and think they resided in Boston while they were here. I know of 3 brothers names only. My grandfather's father was Antonino Saia and his brothers names were Salvatore and the other is Gioacchino Saia. They were born around 1890's - 1900's and came from Palermo Sicily.
Antonino decided to then stop going back and forth to America and went back to Sicily permanently but his brothers decided to stay in America (Boston, NY, or NJ) and possibly marry and raise families. I would like to know of these 2 brothers (and any other brothers that we cannot find out the names of) children, grandchildren and possibly great grandchildren! They may have even moved from that area.
I know there has to be descendants from at least these two Saia's. I wish my Grandfather were alive so I can ask these questions!
So:
*Brothers: Antonino, Salvatore & Giacchino Saia (& Poss More)
*Born 1890-1900
*Worked on the major roadways in America (Boston, NY, NJ, or surrounding areas)
*Possibly married in America
Thanks in Advance!
Josephine

Hi Josephine! Welcome to the forum
Do you have any idea when they first immigrated to US?
Here is a 1920 manifest for Antonino Saia (born about 1881) from Palermo. Leaving wife Giuseppa Zanca, Via Corselli, Palermo; going to Boston, MA to brother Giovanni. (Line 9)

Yes, They worked in America in 1910-1930 so between that time frame.
We also assume they were born 1890's but not sure

I also found death info on a Salvatore Saia born in 1898 that died in Maryland....do you know how I can trace his descendants?

I think the Salvatore that you found is not your Salvatore. I located a 1910 Census for Maryland with Salvatore Saia, born 1898. He was born in Maryland. Your Salvatore was born in Italy, right?

Re: SAIA brothers 1900's
Thank you so much! My parents confirmed the name of his wife, that was definitely my Dad's grandfather! Now we can add Giovanni Saia as one of his brothers since there was many of them! Did you find this at ellis island or someplace else?
Yes. I see that it says he was born in Maryland. They were all born in Palermo and I figure this is not one of mine.
did you research any other Saia brothers I have listed? I appreciate this info!

I just looked on ellis island and didn't find it. Was it from another port???
Re: SAIA brothers 1900's
I found both manifests at Ancestry.com. I will post the second manifest for you...
I will also continue to look for Saia brothers for you. Did any go to California or Pennsylvania?

Re: SAIA brothers 1900's
Thanks so much. I will wait for you to post....
We only know they would go back and forth to the Boston, NY NJ and possibly Pennsylvania area. there is Saia Motor Freight based out of New Orleans, but have heard through unconfirmed sources they weren't from Sicily. Wonder since they worked on the roads, possibly a brother or so could have opened a Frieght company???!!!
I assume you have a membership with Ancestry.com I am just starting out with this research. really don't have the $ to spend on it right now, but I thank you for sharing this info with me!

Re: SAIA brothers 1900's
PS my dad was so happy to hear his grandmothers name on that manifest! So weird to see it written down and they no longer here!
Re: SAIA brothers 1900's
Here is the manifest. Antonino is on line 26. Page 2 shows him going to his brother Giovanni in Boston. The person on Line 27 is also going to Giovanni Saia's address, and indicates that Giovanni is his brother-in-law, leaving wife Isabella Saia in Palermo.

Josephine,
Another way to search for your ancestors' records is to view the microfilms available at your local LDS Family History Center.
Scroll down on this site
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
to put in your zip and find the nearest center. You can rent films for a month for about $6.00. The records are in Italian, and they have Palermo births (nasciti), deaths (morti) and marriages (matrimoni) for years 1820 - 1908. When you locate records you can post them to this forum for translation. There are many here who would gladly translate for you.
