For two surnames. I am not 100% sure they are from Italy but based on family stories and a few trees that I found online I am thinking they are based in Italy, just don't know exactly where.
1. Zuchegno (I also on Ancestory.com spelled as Tuchegno)
2. Chaireberra
I looked online on the surname map and found nothing though. Hopefully someone will have some answers. This is my mother's side of the family and since she passed about 17 years ago, I don't have many people to ask about my heritage on her side.

Re: Needing place of Origin....
If this is Leonardo's 1895 manifest, there's little information except another way to spell his name
possible 1895 ship manifest
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4285/1895vu.jpg
20 Aug 1895, KAISER WILHELM II, Genoa to NY
2nd line from the bottom
Leonardo Zucchegna 16 yrs old (abt 1879) Italy
- single
- destination Philadelphia
---
Not much help but the surname Zucchegna is found in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo Region

Re: Needing place of Origin....
vj, none of the links worked for me. Nevermind they work now.
Thank suanj for your help.
Why would the spelling of Zuchegno be spelled differently so many times?

Re: Needing place of Origin....
I'm so glad we could find some records for your family!
suanj
is one of our experts from Italy - suanj would be one of the forum members that would have a better idea of what the original spelling of your surnames may have been
You surname should have been spelled correctly on the ship manifest.
Once folks arrived in the US they may have changed the spelling of their name to something more 'convenient'
On US records you may find your surnames being 'sounded-out' or transcribed incorrectly.
Do you have your family's US records - census, military registration, etc?
Here's a neat tool for finding where surnames occur in present day Italy
http://www.gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/
Left side under 'Cognome:'
- type your surname in the box
- click the red arrow
When the results appear on the map you can click on them to zoom in
Try Zucchegna from the manifest and Chiabrera from the marriage record
Thank you, Valarie

Re: Needing place of Origin....
thnks Valarie, I believe that the best way for to find the right birthplace is to descover the right surname spelling of Leonardo's mother.. Balzaro... Bolgana... ???? by mother surname could be possible to understand almost the area...
however the area is in ex Abruzzi, now Abruzzo and Molise regions...
best regards,
suanj

Re: Needing place of Origin....
Very interesting. I will have to ask my Aunts when I go back home to visit in the summer. I hope they will have some stories and info for me so that I can record it for myself and my children. I'm not sure how close they were with my grandparents so hopefully they have something to tell.
Thanks again!!
Thanks again!!

what about BOLZANO? There was a period when foundlings and orphans were named after cities in which they were domiciled. =Peter=
