verderaime

Post by LookingforVerderaime »

My great grand father Antonio Verderaime was from Cefalu Sicily. However, I have searched the LDS online search and found nearly nothing. I have also done research through Ancestry.com and cannot find anything prior to him coming to the US. His approximate year of birth is 1868. His parents were Joe(Guissepe?) and Francesca Verderaime. He was married to Guissepa Favaro. She was from Mislmeri. I have run into a road block.

Unfortunately, everything available cannot be found on-line, at this time. Your best bet would be to read the microfilmed records of births, marriages and deaths, for the town of Cefalu to get all the details about the Verderaime family. These can be rented and read at a Mormon Family History Library. Records are available for the period: 1820 - 1910. You can find the microfilm numbers on their web site. Although the records are written in Italian, there is a very helpful book you could purchase to help you along the way. "A Genealogist's Guide to Discovering Your Italian Ancestors" by Lynn Nelson, contains all the translations plus other great information. Good luck.

I found a ship's manifest abt Giuseppa Favarò ( with accent in the end of surname) travelling in 1906 with daughter Angelina Affronti, born abt 1904 in Misilmeri, and joining at Filippo Affronti, husband in Pryor, Huerfano, Colorado...

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0009

abt Filippo Affronti:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Filippo Affronti
Name: Filippo Affronti
Arrival Date: 28 Jun 1906
Birth Year: abt 1873
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race¬/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Citta di Milano

final destination the uncle in Pryor, Huerfano, Colorado...
It is possible that Giuseppa Favarò was widow of Filippo Affronti and after married at Antonio Verderaime/Verderame???

now in 1912 a:

First Name: Antonino
Last Name: Verderame
Ethnicity: U. S. Citizen
Last Place of Residence: Trinidad, CO
Date of Arrival: Mar 22, 1912
Age at Arrival: 40y Gender: M Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Taormina
Port of Departure: Palermo
Manifest Line Number: 0008
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passR ... 0864010406&
born in Cefalù, back at home in Trinidad, CO ... the surname is Verderame ( because Verderaime is a wrong version of Verderame surname and in all Italy exist only 1 person with Verderaime surname... http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi ... =&dv=&ind=)
the birthyear is abt 1872...

I say not that is your ancestor but it could be it....
in 1903 a trip of a Antonino Verderaime from Cefalù, final destination

Colorado, joining at cousin Salvatore Camilleri

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Antonino Verderain
Name: Antonino Verderain
Arrival Date: 11 May 1903
Birth Year: abt 1874
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Regina Elena

http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/1176 ... me1903.jpg
the birthyear is around 1874....
so maybe to search in Cefalù births from 1870 to 1877 could be helpful for to find your ancestor....

Bette, thank you. I will check out that book, thanks. My next adventure will be to learn some Italian so I can contact some of these folks from the Italian white pages. Luckily, I have been able to get into contact with a Verderaime in Rome. Oddly enough, her family says that technically the I should be a J, so Verderajme.

Suanj - The ships manifest you found for Guissepina Favaro is her. She was married to Filippo Affronti prior to Antonio Verderaime and had a daughter Angelina. However, she was left a widow. I will see if I have any luck going directly to a Latter Day Saints extension to look at the microfilms, thanks. I never saw a manifest mentioning a cousin Salvatore Camilleri, that is AWESOME, thank you!

Antonio Verderaime father
Josephine - mother
Angeline - passed away from the flu half-sister father Filippo Affronti
Frank - my grandfather
Annie
RoseAnne
Albert had a twin I believe that died at birth or very young. He is still alive and living in Aguilar, Colorado still. He unfortunatley would refuse to tell anyone about family in Sicily so any information there is will die with him, he is alreay about 90.

I hope to make it to Cefalu some day to get to the truth.

Thank you all who responded. Some of the info I had found already, but ther are some more tangents I can follow now and more inofrmation to go on. This is great.

My grandmother also wrote Verderajme with a "j."

Her great-grandmother Teresa Verderajme was born in 1843 and in Cefalu. She was the daughter of Nicolo Verderajme and Rosaria Testa.

Unfortunately I don't go any farther back or have more detail.

I am suspicious that Verderajme is a Norman last name and tied to the Norman conquest.

I have met some Verderajmes with a j on facebook. I have to wonder if they are a relation to you. I also spoke with a Vincenzo Verderajme, was it last year, I can't remember. He mentioned he spoke with my cousin Anthony in Colorado Springs and they figured out how we are related. I know there is a connection, I just haven't found it yet. He also mentioned that Verderaimes were royal guard to King Roger. As far as my family, we had never heard about the "j" until just recently. My great grandfather was Antonio Verderaime from Cefalu. He came to America around the turn of the century. I below sometime around 1898. He came through Ellis Island and met my great grandmother according to my great uncle. She was Guissepina Favaro. They are as far as I have gotten in my tree. I plan to hit the LDS library at some point to do some more research.
