Looking for the Biggie (Biggi) and Chiesa and Repito

Post by lilasgarden »

My GGrandfather whose name was Biggie later shortened to Biggi and my GGrandmother Caterina Chiesa came to the USA between 1860-1875. I have seen my GGrandfather's name listed as Joseph and John B. (Giovanni) His death cert. 19 Dec. 1906 lists his parents as Andrew Biggie and Madoline Repito.

My GGrandmother, Caterina Chiesa, entered the USA about the same time. I know that she lived in Boston and then Somerville, MA. most of her life. Born: Nov. 1849 Died: 15 Sep 1933.

I believe that the right surname spelling is Biggi and not Biggie; the Repito surname is Repetto right..; I believe they coming from Genova town, or surrounding area...
It was 2 John/John B (Giovanni-Giovanbattista/Giambattista); 1 married at Caterina Chiesa and 1 married at Cristina Gatti; however I believe that the Biggis in Boston, MA, they was all related in some way...
just a suggestion,
all the best,

Thanks suanj! :-)

I will try to find the "other" John (Giovanni)... since the above census might be the one who married Cristina Gatti... :-(

The above birth record would also follow the traditional Italian naming pattern :-)

This son was named Andrea after his grandfather (whose Americanized name on the death certificate you noted was "Andrew")

Thank you all for this information. My ggrandfather married Caterina, not Christina. Elizabeth Biggi is my paternal grandmother.

Where would I write in Italy to get more records about Giovanni Biggi and Caterina Chiesa? Also can I assume that Andrea and Madeline Repetto came from the same area in Italy?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi G!

You would need to know the exact place of birth to write to Italy for records. If your grandmother Elizabeth has/had a Social Security #, her application for Social Security would list her parents' names and their place of birth.

Once you find the comune (town) of birth we can give you directions for requesting documents....

Send for SS application (for a fee) at this site...
http://genealogy.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi= ... t/main.jsp

If you don't know your grandmother's SS#, you can try a search here...
http://genealogy.about.com/od/vital_records/a/ssdi.htm

If you still hit a brick wall (or as another alternative to consider)...
You can send for Frank Biggi's SS application (Elizabeth's brother) at the above site. It will hold the same info for parent's.

Social Security Death Index

Name: Frank Biggi
SSN: 013-03-9835
Last Residence: 01741 Carlisle, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States of America
Born: 22 Sep 1884
Died: May 1974
State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (Before 1951)
