Surname - Brandol or Giavia in northern Italy, late 1800's

Post by jeri71 »

The Brandol's and Giavia's immigrated together around 1910-1913, some as late as the 1920's. Leonardo Brandol, his wife Margherita, their son Michele and her brother Massimo are the ones I know of for sure. They lived in Giaveno, Italy. Some came to Utah and others to California. So far I haven't been able to trace the families past Leo and Margherita.

Thank you anyone who can help further our search!!

8O here is a longshot... nicely scripted too... just sounds too much like Leonardo Brandol.. but the town is correct!

This "Leonildo" would be joining an uncle in Utah... can't make out the wife's name...

Dear Jeri,

There is microfilm for the town of Giaveno at the Family History Center. You can go and order the film and rent it for $3.50 a roll. The link is below. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... =1&last=50

Also, get a pedigree chart and start writing down your information. You want to start from yourself and then work your way backwards. Also, try to find any census record that you can. This can narrow down the years of death, when a person was married, how many children were born, and when a person came to the USA and was naturalized. Each census has different types of information on them.

Try to get anyone Death certificate especially Leonardo's and his wife. If you don't have a date, but know the cemetery, you can contact the cemetery for the burial date. The burial date can help you get the death certificate.

I hope this helps.

Hi Jerry, after reading your post I thought that Margherita's surname would be Giava... 8O .. as the manifest suanj posted has her as a Brandol. But it clearly is Leonildo's wife and child.. I guess you were talking about Giavia's in general?... or how does this name fit in?

Margherita is Leonaldo (Leonardo?)'s wife. Michele (Mike) is their son and my grandfather. This was the easy part, our problem is getting past them and back into Italy. I will try ordering the microfilm.

Trish: Thanks for your help. This is a dumb question, but I am new at this? How do I order the film from the Family History Center? Is it the one in Salt Lake? Do we just call and order it and go up when it's in? Or can we order it from our local History Center?

Seriously, THANK you, this is a good start!

yes...understood... was just trying to clarify Margherita's surname... most women entered Ellis under their maiden name...

Good luck with the research! :D

Moreover the correct italian spelling is Giai Via and not Giavia, all people emigrated was from Giaveno:

1. Agostino Giai Via Giaveno, North Italy 1911 24
2. Basilio Giai Via Giaveno, Italy 1912 23
3. Carolina Giai Via Giaveno, Corino, Italy 1910 25
4. Celestina Giai-Via Giaveno, Italy 1913 29
5. Domenico Giai Via Giaveno, Corino, Italy 1910 39
6. Domenico Giai-Via Giaveno, Turin 1906 34
7. Massimo Giai Via Giaveno, Italy 1913 17
8. Teresa Giai Via Giaveno, Torino 1922 34
9. Tillorio Giai Via Giavenna, , Italy 1913 25
Innocenza Giaia Via Giaveno, Italy 1921 31
