Re: Location on record says Cava T...is that Cava Di Tirreni
Hi and welcome!
That would be my guess, too
But here is a link to all the frazioni (villages) with "Cava" in the name...
See if something else makes sense to you.

Re: Location on record says Cava T...is that Cava Di Tirreni
Are you subscribed to the World Deluxe version? Need that to do international searches.
That being said, not all comunes are available on Ancestry...
Go to the SEARCH button on Ancestry and on the drop-down menu choose "Card Catalog"
Put "Italy" in the title and all of the locations for records will be listed on the right... see if the place you are looking for is there...
If you post names, dates, etc. maybe I can help...

Re: Location on record says Cava T...is that Cava Di Tirreni
While you are trying to search online, why not write directly to the comune to request birth record for Antonio.
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Roma
84013 Cava dei Tirreni (SA)
ITALY
Write in Italian
Form letters and instructions here...
http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

If he and Antonetta were married in this town, you can request his marriage record as well

wow thank you very much Tessa78
Ill give those a try and see what I can come up with.
I pretty much know that John Lodato was born in that town, not 100% if his parents were? Are there any census records for this town?

I used google map to check the locations of those 7 phone #s, 1 seems to be a market, 2 are car dealers, 1 looked like an empty lot?
So I looked up Lodato in Italian and it means praised.
not sure if those are actual Lodato's or what
I'll start by writing a letter to the commune I guess

People didn't move around much in those days when travel was mostly on horseback or horse/ox drawn cart. It will take me awhile to find the actual reference, but I recall reading some time ago that prior to the dawn of the 20th century, most people never traveled more than 15 miles from their place of birth in their entire lives.Lodato3 wrote:wow thank you very much Tessa78

If your ancestor was born in a smaller comune, it is likely that his parents, grandparents, great- and great-great grandparents were born there as well. If he was born in a large city such as Naples or Rome, then it is likely that his family originated in one of the surrounding comuni.
The subject of Italian censuses comes up here often; the short answer is that if you can find them at all, there is generally no useful information. Typically just head-of-household, number of other persons living there, number of horses, pigs, goats, etc (the census was used for tax purposes more than anything else). Churches , however, maintained their own "census" of sorts to keep track of the parishoners and thier families. These records can be very helpful but difficult to read and difficult to get hold of.

Google maps does not always have a good grasp of street numbers, even for communities here in the US.

Based on a thread here many months back, I found that you do not need World Deluxe if all you are interested in is US and Italian records.Tessa78 wrote:Are you subscribed to the World Deluxe version? Need that to do international searches.
Instead, after creating your US account, go to the ancestry . it site (you can use the google translated version for reference) and sign up for the "Italy only" version for just €9,95 per year. You can even use the same username/password/billing info as on your US account.

it was 30% off....i choose the monthly, and they said it would only be $20 a month for next 3 months. I will only stick with this month tho.
plus i have family from Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia...
so the world records are at least helpful for the irish and scottish sides.
