Altavilla Milicia, Sicily

Post by mstan »

My family (Cardella and Farina) are from Altavilla Milicia, Sicily. They came to US in 1890s. How do I get information about them prior to coming to US? Are there resources in Sicily?
Thanks,
Marie

Welcome the are numerous ways of getting info as long as you know they came from that town. I would use theFamily history LIbrary and use the microfilm of birth, marriage and death records of Altavilla Milicia Sicily which they have at the library
Here are the films of Altavilla Milicia and there film numbers click on the next line
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... +Altavilla++
This is a family history locator
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp
Info for italian records click on the next line
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Italy_ ... al_Records
I would search these films first for info on the family from Altavilla Milicia before I would write any letters to Italy for info.
Heres one more bit on reading info for you about records and reading them

Marty,
Thanks for your help. I will use these resources.

I think both my grandparents came from Altavilla Milicia.
This is what I know so far:
My great grand mother, Madelena Parisi Cardella (birth ~1855), her daughter (my grandma) Giovanna Cardella (1880-1955) and her son Charlie (I think his real name was Vincenzo) (birth 1887) headed to Chicago in 1897.
I remember my mother telling me that my grandfather Gaspare Farina came to US in same boat. I can't find any information about Gaspare.
Gaspare (Jaspar) and Giovanna (Joanne) were married in Chicago in 1898 and had 7 children between 1899-1919.
I would like to learn more about my Grandparents. Did my Great Grandfather made it to the US?

Any help is appreciated,
Marie

On the 1897 manifest for Madelena and her children, she was going to her husband Biagio Cardella in Chicago... so I guess he did make it to US... :-)

T,

THANK YOU! These documents are great. You made my day. I can't wait to show my cousins.
Giuseppa Farina was my Aunt Josie
John Farina was my Uncle Joe

I thought their names were Josephine and Joseph.

I will write to the commun. Can my letter to them be written in English?

Thank you again for your time.
