I am impatient and anxious. help me write this letter.

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

those links were helpful! thank you for that!! what I am getting is that there is no way to tell and I should be more patient and stop my bitc*ing. If they say 3-4 I will continue to wait out a fourth month then go from there.

It depends on the consulate really and NY tells you when they send your info on to your comune to be recorded and lets you come in for your passport before you're even on the books in Italy (is what I'm hearing).

In my case, Boston told me that my documents had been sent on to Italy but I had to wait until I was recorded before I could get my passport. I then sent a request for my birth certificate to Italy (first letter I still hadn't been recorded, second I had and got my BC).

I don't remember what I did with my first letter template but here's one to use (I used it as part of my second request):

i was told that Newark was going to send the information to my comune and that in approx 2 months to write the comune and ask them for my birth record. Once the comune sends me the record, I can call Newark and schedule my passport.

Hope this helps.

My cousin applie in SF on march 2007 and got his italian citizenship on october 2008, yes, after 18 months, dont drive yourself nuts, just be patient, and one day you will become italian citizen. The law states you need to wait around 550 days to get it, it doesnt matter where you applied.
I hope it helps
bye Riccardo

Screaminmonkey, I dont know
I just know there is a long time to wait.
The most important thing is that your application
was accepted, so all documents have been filed already,
or maybe they are on the way to be filed in the town of your ancestor.
For anything you know where I'm

I had sent the consulate a modest email a couple days ago and have not heard back. Do you think it is bad if I email the commune to see if they have my birth certificate registered yet?

Yes, why not, email the comune, you should write it only in italian,
so for sure they understand what is written in it,
good luck

@Monkey - I think you'd have a better chance calling the consulate and asking your status than e-mailing or writing the commune. For, if you application has been approved, sent and registered at your commune - you would want your passport. The NYC Consulate handles the passport, so either/or they would notify you when it's time to come in for that.

Call them and you just ask - when can I come in for my passport? They'll look up your file and tell you what your status is when you ask.

Then -- you can ask about mine ;)

I recommend that while you're in Italy, you drop by Comune and introduce yourself. Tell them you have a case pending through your consulate. When they do get your papers at the Comune, they will remember that you stopped by to pay them a visit and that you are obviously serious about being recognized.
