cast-valles?

Post by nycpilot »

Hello, this is my first time on the forum.

My question is this - My great-grandfather, Antonio castelli, came through Ellis in 1920 from the port of la havre in France. However, it list his last residence as castvalises on the shipping manifest. I can not find this town anywhere. And what is interesting is that there are a few people from cast-valles on the manifest as well. What does this mean? Is cast-vales a real town? I do not have any other info about antonio. We do not know who his parents were or what town they came from. All I know is after fighting in world war 1 in the Italian military, Antonio left europe via la havre for Ellis.

Thank you in advance for any insight that you may be able to provide.

The spelling I believe is wrong. This was normal when taing down information when immigrants arrived at Ellis.

The residence shows as Cast-Valles-Terano-Italy

Here is a link listing the towns in Italy by area.

My best guess: Comune di Castello di Serravalle, Provincia di Bologna, Regione di Emilia-Romagna, Northeastern Italy

This link is within the one I sent previous. Hoever it is under the province of TERAMO. As stated, it could have been a misspelling.

This may also be a reference to a frazione of the city of Teramo.

Either way, it is a long distance from Le Havre.

Castiglione della valle... a village of the comune of Colledara in the Province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region.

About Colledara -

Map - zoom once and you will see the frazione (village) to the northeast - about 1.1 km from Colledara.

You people are great! I got to tell my grandfather who his grandparents where and what town they came from. I am thinking the next step would be to write to the italian authorities to obtain Antonio's military records.

Thanks again,

-I have some other questions about another side of the family - I will address that on another thread.
