Guisani Family living in Cork, Ireland (late 1800s)

I am looking for details of a Guisani family who were living in Cork, Ireland in the late 1800s to present day. I am trying to pad out a family tree I am researching, which started when I found a WW1 'death penny' in a charity shop in Kent, England, and was interested to find out how and why it ended up there!!

The 'death penny' was for a St John Joseph Vincent Anthony Guisani who died on the 13th November 1916, aged 19 years. His parents were Dr. Joseph J. Guisani (1860-1937) who was a doctor at the Cork Union Hospital from 1892, and Nora(h) B. Donovan (1858-1940). Both his parents deaths were registered in Cork, Ireland.

He had 3 siblings;
May Josephine Guisani (1904-1991, Cork) who married Patrick Joseph "Don" O'Sullivan in 1930; Jane Hope Clare Guisani (b. c1901) who married in Rathdown, Ireland in c.1937 (But to whom I do not know); and a third who I think died in infancy.

If anyone has any further details about this family, his parents and/or siblings, I would be most grateful, especially if it can link to why St John's death penny ended up in England.

I belive there is another spelling; Giussani

From my research with this family, i believe Dr Joseph's Father/Uncle to be John Guisani, born Staffordshire, England, and his father to be Pietro Guisani, born in Foreign Country (italy).

In 1911, only St. John Guisani is listed in the Ireland census; he is resident at a boarding school in "Castletown (or Clongowes) (Balraheen, Kildare)" See http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/p ... s_/539762/; scroll near the bottom of the page to select images to download ("View census images").

PS: I did not experiment with spelling variations.

Guisani 2/Lt StJohn Joseph Vincent Anthony went to Dollymount for Lewis Gun course. Killed in Action 13 Nov 1916 Age 19. Son of Joseph Guisani, M.D., and Nora Guisani, of St. Patrick's Hill, Cork, Ireland.. Knightsbride Cemeterey.

Dear Simone,

St John Giusani was my Grand Uncle. His sister Josephine Giusani ( married to Don O'Sullivan) was my Grandmother who died in 1991. Their daughter, ( my mother)Mary O'sullivan( Fennelly) died in 2007. My name is John Fennelly and I currently live in Portland, Oregon USA but grew up in Cork, Ireland.

All these Guisani's are buried in St Joseph's cemetery in Cork dating back to the early 1800's.

I can remember my Mum talking about her Mother's brother who died in WW1. I remember there was a photo of a very young St John in his uniform in my Grandmother's home. Where it is now, I'm not sure. There are no Giusani's left in Cork as the name died out with St. John.

I am very interested in my Grand Uncle's death penny as we didn't even know it existed and why he wasn't buried in Ireland with the rest of the family. St John's father was Dr. Joseph Giusani who died in 1937. St. John's sister Mabel Giusani died at age 16 and is buried with Dr. Giusani and his wife Nora. I am trying to research Jane Giusani who married in Rathdown, Ireland in 1937 but I can't recall ever hearing about a Great Aunt Jane. Joseph's father John and wife Jane Giusani are buried together in Cork as well as John's father Peter ( died 1863) and wife Sarah Giusani.(1876).

Peter Giusani traveled from Wolverhampton, England to Cork. He was a barometer maker/craftsman from northern Italy. We think he was born in 1775 and died at the age of 88 in Cork. I believe he was born in Italy but I am not sure. I haven't found any information on his birth place.

My Mum would have been so happy to have known about St John's death penny as she had researched the family and even purchased a Peter Giusani barometer that is on the wall of my brother's house in Cork.

Your post has been very helpful in researching my family. I am descended from John Giusani and Jane Walsh through their son Stephen. Do you have any additional information on the Giusani's from Cork? I have also been unable to trace Peter back to Italy. Do you have any additional information that might be helpful? Thank You for your assistance!
