Help with death certificate - died while traveling on train

Post by Italy#1 »

Hello, I am searching for a death certificate or even an obituary for my great aunt Letizia "Laura" Smiraglia, born abt 1912, death date is 21 June 1930 (this is from her sisters Bible and confirmed by Mt. Carmel Hillside Cemetery in Chicago Il). I am told that her last known address is in Rochester, NY??? and that she was traveling by train from Chicago, IL to Hazelton, PA to visit family. I do not know where she died, therefore I can find no information for her.

Any help or Idea's of where to search would be appreciated!

Have you contacted the operators of Mt. Carmel Hillside Cemetery in Chicago? They may be
able to help you find out where to locate the death certificate. She may have been
pronounced dead in Hazleton, so perhaps contacting a coroners office there to help you get leads would help as well.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for your help, unfortunatly Mt. Carmel has no info. They did not require any information about the death or a certificate of death. They only show her last known address as being in NY.

If you trace back through Mt Carmel and ask them what funeral home was used you can get more info on Letizia Smiragli

Have you tried contacting the train co.? i.e. Toledo & Ohio Central; Pennsylvania Railroad; I'm sure they would have in their archived records a notation of someone passing away on the train. Then you would know what state/county issued the death certificate. :)

I was reading about transporting dead bodies and the train co needed to have a transit tag. These would have been filed with State or County Dept of Health or Vital Records. If you can check these places in PA or IL you might get a lead.
