Vincent Mistretta -- New Orleans/Texas

Post by kat2412 »

Hello,

I am searching for my GGF Vincent (Vincenzo) Mistretta. Specifically, I am looking for passenger list records. I haven't been very successful finding any records of him on my own other than a WWI draft card. He came over as a boy -- maybe 12? With his aunt Joesphine Mistretta. Any help finding this record, or any documents would be appreciated. He was born April 17th, 1890 in Mistretta (though documents may say Palermo) which means he may have immigrated around 1902 -- I believe he came in though New Orleans, La. but I'm not positive. He left from Palermo I believe and if he didn't come into the US through the port of New Orleans, I know he lived there for many years and then moved to the Bryan/Navasota, Texas area and then later Houston, Texas. Thanks in advance for lending me your time and resources :D

Hi :-)

Have posted a manifest on the other thread for Vincenzo Mistretta, age 13, arriving in 1882 to Port of New Orleans. Last residence listed as Palermo.

Hi Tessa78 -- thank you for this document and for looking for this for me. But based on the info I have, I don't think this is the right Vincent Mistretta. We know that he was born in Mistretta April 17, 1890 so it seems this Vincent Mistretta is too old to be correct. But I will double-check the dates to be sure. We also know that he came over with Josephine Mistretta so I believe her name would be on the manifest also. Thank you so much!

Thank you Suanj! I would never have been able to find these records because of all the misspellings! Thank you again so much. If I could solicit you a bit further, would you happen to know where I can find passenger lists for immigrants coming from Palermo into the port of New Orleans in the early 1900's? Vincent Mistretta came here with Josephine Mistretta. Tessa found a Vincent Mistretta on a manifest but I don't think it is the right Vincent Mistretta. Thank you for everything.

Hi,
by WWI draft registration card Vincent declared that he was naturalized; in 1920 census he declared that was born in Louisiana; in 1930 he was a alien...
in New Orleans arrivals I cannot find it, but if we find the naturalization, if he naturalized effectively, we can descover when he arrived...

here the Mistrettas arrived in USA until 1900:
http://stevemorse.org/ellis/aad.php?db= ... ction=desc

but no helpful abt your Vincent...

Hi, searching abt your Vincent/Vincenzo Mistretta, I believe that when he arrived in USA, the final destination was not New Orleans, LA, but the Texas...
In effects Mary Greco, Vincent wife, she was born in Texas, and I believe they married in Texas....
more: Mary Greco lived in Brazos co. TX; here the 1910 census:

Name: Mary Greco
Birthplace: Texas
Relationship to Head of Household: Daughter
Residence: Justice Precinct 4, Brazos, Texas
Marital Status: Single
Race : White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year:
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Birthplace: Italy
Family Number: 310
Page Number: 17
Household Gender Age
Parent Rosa Greco F 60y b. in Italy
Sam Greco M 20y b. in Louisiana
Peter Greco M 19y b. in TX
Mary Greco F 14y ditto

In 1910 census was also in same place( census date 7 may 1910( the date is helpful for to be better idea abt Vincent/Charley father death):

1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Charley Mistreta
Birthplace: Italy
Relationship to Head of Household: Self
Residence: Justice Precinct 4, Brazos, Texas
Marital Status: Single

Mother's Birthplace: Italy
Family Number: 324
Page Number: 18
Household Gender Age
Charley Mistreta M 21y
Mary Mistreta F 15y sister b. in Italy
Frank Mistreta M 10y brother ( b. in TX)

Image

Well, I have no doubts that this Charley Mistretta is your Vincent/Vincenzo Mistretta... that used Charley first name...

in effects the family lived in Brazos Co, TX also in 1900 census:

1900 United States Federal Census about Charly Misitret
Name: Charly Misitret ( Carmelo Mistretta italian name)
[Owen Misetret]
Home in 1900: Justice Precinct 5, Brazos, Texas
[Brazos, Texas]
Age: 45
Birth Date: Feb 1855
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1893
Relationship to head-of-house: Head

the ages as a well the birth months are no rights completely, but I am sure that this is your Vincent Mistretta....

Carmelo/Charley died in 1910:
Name: Chas Mistrata
Death Date: 12 Apr 1910
Death Place: Bryan, Brazos, Texas
Gender: Male
Race: White
Death Age: About 57 years
Estimated Birth Date: 1853
Birth Date:
Birthplace: Sicily
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name:
Father's Name: Chas Mistrata
Father's Birthplace: Sicily
Mother's Name:
Mother's Birthplace: Sicily
Occupation: Farmer
Place of Residence:

Burial Place: Bryan, Texas
Burial Date: 12 Apr 1910
Additional Relatives:
Film Number: 2050279
Digital Film Number: 4165848
Image Number: 2223
Reference Number: 15384

really Chas/Carmelo Mistretta was born around 1855/6 and I believe that really the family emigrated in USA in 1894; I know not if I am correct, but I believe that I am correct, because nobody Vincenzo Mistretta came with a Josephine/Mistretta... I am sure abt that;
instead I am positive that Vincenzo Mistretta came with parents and sisters:
Rosalia aka Rose Mistretta married at Frank/Francesco Penino(spell?):
Groom's Name: Francisco Penino
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Rosa Mistreta
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 22 Nov 1902
Marriage Place: Brazos, Texas
Groom's Father's Name:
Groom's Mother's Name:
Bride's Father's Name:
Bride's Mother's Name:
Groom's Race:
Groom's Marital Status:
Groom's Previous Wife's Name:
Bride's Race:
Bride's Marital Status:
Bride's Previous Husband's Name:
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M75205-0

System Origin: Texas-EASy
Source Film Number: 1020035
Reference Number: p 249

and Maria that in 1910 lived with brothers; the little Frank Mistretta was born in TX and not in Italy;

so, if I am correct, this must be the arrival:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Carmels Mistretta
Name: Carmels Mistretta(Carmelo Mistretta)
Arrival Date: 28 Apr 1894
Birth Year: abt 1856
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race¬/Nationality: Italian
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Letimbro

with:
wife Maria age 32,
daughter Rosalia age 8,
son Vincenzo( is listed as female but is male) age 7,
daughter Maria age 2

all coming from Roccapalumba ( small village in Palermo province, Sicily, IT); map: http://maps.google.it/maps?hl=it&sugexp ... a=N&tab=wl

final destination: Bryan, TX

Image

Again: if my search is right, you can find Vincenzo Mistretta birth act by LDS microfilms:

Registri dello stato civile di Roccapalumba (Palermo), 1821-1910 Roccapalumba (Palermo). Ufficio dello stato civile
Births, deaths, marriages, marriage banns, records of citizenship, and documents attached to records from the civil registration office in Roccapalumba (Palermo). Some registries include an index. Text in Italian.

Hi Suanj!

Where would we all be without you? Sorry for the late response but I've been looking into all of the information you provided and it seems like you are 100% correct. It's going to make getting documents difficult with all the name and date changes :( but we will see. I had one last question for you. I assume Vincent was born in Roccapalumba and I'd like to find his birth certificate there. You helped me once before to get a birth certificate from Bisacquino that arrived 3 weeks later! Here is what you sent me and I've filled in the parts with Vincent's info. I do not know if Vincent's mother's name is Maria or Rosie because there are records that say both. Though, on the boat manifest her name is Maria but I cannot read the last name that is different from Mistretta. Also, I do not know when Mary Greco and Vincent Mistretta were married so I deleted that part of it. Would you take a look at my letter to make sure it makes sense and that I've provided enough information? Also maybe you know the email address I can send it to?

You also sent me this link: Would it be easier to look for a birth certificate there?

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... +Roccapalu

Thank you for any help and for all you were able to uncover. I would never have found any of it since the names are so different!

PS: Vincent mother, the first name was Maria; Rose was the mother of Mary Greco; the informant on Vincent death certificate made confusion; surely the mother of Vincent was Maria, maybe Maria MANCA( so I read on the ship's manifest) married Mistretta... however the txt explain all so the civil records officer can find the birth act...

Hi Suanj,

For the past year, I have been searching for my family's documents. I have found countless records that you helped lead me to. There is only one document that I have not been able to find, the marriage certificate of Vincent Mistretta and Mary Greco. In one of your responses to this thread, dated Oct. 26, you said you believed Vincent and Mary were married in Texas. My question is, in your search for my family members -- was there any evidence you found that shows they were married in Texas? As of right now, I don't know where they were married or the date which is making it impossible to find a marriage license for them.. Any information you have about this or where I could look for more information, would be helpful. Thanks!
