Need help- Fioravanti lineage

Post by fino »

I have come to a roadblock. My ggrandmother was Marta Fioravanti born July 19, 1862 in Palmiano, Ascoli Piceno, Marche. Her mother was Caterina Fioravanti. For whatever reason Marta took her mother's name (Fioravanti). I would like to try finding out what Marta's fathers name was. Is there any way to find out, any shot at all?
thanks, Fino

Fino,
ask to comune of Palmiano to have the copy of birth certificate, then read it (or translate it) and see why. I guess Marta had not a legittimate father

This is Palmiano civil record office address

Municipio Di Palmiano
63049 Palmiano (AP)

tel.0736.362142

I hope it helps, bye ricbru

Now I found the complete address

Comune
Piazza Umberto 1°, 5
63049 Palmiano (AP)
Italy

Telefono: 0736/362142

as I can understand this comune has 222 people, so this is why I can't find email address

If you can't write Italia, help yourself with this link to write a civil record request

I hope it helps, bye ricbru

The best way would be to search the Palmiano birth records yourself, if you can. By reading them all you are likely to find Marta's parents.

I think there are four possible explanations.

1) Marta's parents both had the same surname. I see this often in the towns I research.

2) Marta's father was unknown (i.e. she was born illegitimately)

3) The clerk wrote the wrong surname on the record you have. This is especially likely if you are looking at an extract instead of the original.

4) She actually chose the mother's surname over the father's surname. I think this is the least likely explanation.

Of course you may know something about Marta that allows you to discount some explanations and favor others. In my experience, though, this is the order of likelihood I would expect in general.

Thank you ricbru, vineviz, suanj,
I sent a letter to Palmiano asking for Marta's birth certificate today. I will wait and see what comes.
suanj- The second point is probably the fact. Even though it has upset my MOM very much. In fact she says she will not tell her 4 brothers. Mothers are amazing.
