Italian Baptismal Record - form

Post by jsoto »

Am researching films on Italian Baptism Records; many are illegible, making it difficult to understand the entire text. Does anyone know a resource to obtain the entire form/text for Baptismal Record that begins "Ego Sacerdo....." (would like to know the entire statement of the record for ancestors found. Thank you!

The information the priest recorded was basically up to him. Usually includes , name of baby, names of parents, sometimes even the time of birth and daty of birth if different than the baptism. The date of the baptism often written out in full (not numbers)
Many priests included their name and qualifications, name of the parish, diocese etc.
and, of course, the Godparents (Patrini) names.
Study several entries until you see a pattern. eg Name of priest, Name of baby, name of parents, names of Godparents. Once you have established the pattern it will become easier to search.
The name of the baby was often written in the margin or underlined. ALways check the back of the book for an index and remember that a page number is often both sides of the page.
Remember to ask if there is a Stato delle Anime for the period you are searching.
Happy searching.

Thank you, Ann, for your response & explanation; while I've been able to determine dates, baby's & parent names, etc. it's difficult to determine the other text/statements made on baptismal records. It makes sense that each priest may have had their own format or style.

Your helpful comments are appreciated.
