Leone, Italy?

Post by sunbari1 »

My Great Uncle's obituary states that he was born in Leone, Italy but when I looked it up on Google Maps, no such location came up. Any clues to where it could be?

Hello, Tom!

Could not find "Leone" but here are a few possibilities...

Leonessa, comune of Leonessa - province: Rieti - region: Lazio
Leonessa, comune of Melfi - province: Potenza - region: Basilicata
Leonforte, comune of Leonforte - province: Enna - region: Sicily

Obituaries (and death records) in the US are known for being inaccurate. The surviving members of the family may not know the facts, but rather the family stories, OR the "americanized" pronunciations of people, places and things :-D

Where were his siblings born?
That may provide a clue...
Maybe we can help you narrow down a location...

My guess is Lioni, province of Avellino.
I think "Leone" is how an English-speaking person would write it.

Do you have a ship manifest for your great uncle? If you don't, we might look for it, and see if it states his place of origin. But you should tell us something more (full name, date of birth...)

Pippo, you are correct! Last night, I found the ship manifest for him, his mother and three siblings who traveled together in 1920 and his father's who traveled by himself in 1913 and they all say "Lioni", which does indeed appear in Google Maps. Thanks everyone for your help!
