New York Public Library Birth Records Index
New York Public Library Birth Records Index
Hi,
I'm trying to find my grandfather's birth date. He was born in Brooklyn to Italian immigrant parents and given the name Leonardo Antonio Grippi, which he later anglicized. For most of his life he gave his birth date as July 27, 1919. His father's naturalization record from 1922 gave his birth date as July 12, 1919. And in the 1920 census, enumerated in Jan., his age was listed as 2 years, 2 months old. (The address and family members matches the info on the naturalization record, so it's definitely the same family)
The New York Public library has an index of births records in NYC that extends to 1982 but you have to go to the library in person to search them.
http://www.nypl.org/locations/tid/36/node/113334
Does anyone know what the index at library says for each person besides name and presumably certificate number? Does it include a birth date or not? Or any other useful information? I'd like to know to what exactly it contains before I plan a trip to New York City to check the index myself.

Re: New York Public Library Birth Records Index
It would be my guess that the records at the NY Public Library will hold little information other than date and certificate number.
Here is a resource that may be of help...

Justin,
Thank you so much for taking the time to look up the index record for me. Even just this index record is very helpful. Whenever NYC moves the 1919 birth records to their archive dept., I'll use the certificate number to order a copy.
I'm still baffled as to how a census taker could end up recording a 5 month old as a 2 year old. But that will have to be one of those mysteries that can never be answered now.

Re: New York Public Library Birth Records Index
Since Justin was kind enough to actually look for my grandfather's birth information in the New York Public Library birth index, I'm hoping that someone with access to the index could help me with another Grippi family mystery.
The birth date of my grandfather's oldest brother, Benedetto, was most often given as January 07, 1913. However my great-grandparents were married in March 1913 at St. Lucy's in Brooklyn. (I have a copy of the record) Initially, I assumed that he might have been born in 1914 since he was listed as 6 years old in the 1920 census. However, a few months ago I found the family in the 1915 NY state census and Benedetto's age was listed as 2 years old.
Any help in trying to solve this maddening family mystery would be greatly appreciated.

Justin,
Wow that was really fast. Thanks. I guess I might as well ask you for confirmation of the middle brother's date of birth. He was Matteo Grippi and his birth date was given as March 12, 1917.
I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Re: New York Public Library Birth Records Index
Hi I'm from the UK and new to this board. This thread was interesting to me as I'm looking for an NY birth in 1919 and haven't been able to find any online indexes. Justin, can I be cheeky and ask if you access to the index?
I'm looking for a Marvin Russell Jess born in NY in 1919. If I could get the actual date it could be a major clue in knocking down a brick wall. I'm hoping for 23 March?
I'd be so grateful.

OMG!!! Justin, you are a star! This is a major breakthrough. Can't thank you enough
One little question, was there no middle name or initial on the index?

Marvin Russell Jess and Parmigiano...I would like to contact you. I believe Marvin Russell Jess mother is Bertha Fischer. If you have information we could share?
